I have a three year old daughter who runs my life. I plan on getting rir or isa brown chicks but she wants white chickens not brown

. So my question is which chickens are white and cold hardy, not flighty and decent layers. I figure I can humor her seeing as I want to get chickens so that she can learn bout them and we can have some fun at the same time. Thanks

Get her a pretty little white bantam cochin. It looks like a cotton ball, very docile and will enjoy being held by little hands.

We have Dominiques but they are grey/white speckled. They are great cold weather birds. Look for a rose comb - they don't freeze as bad.

On this website http://www.mypetchicken.com/ go to the bottom left side in tools and click breed selection.

Oh and the Doms are lap chickens. They beg to be petted and sit on your lap if you let them. Hard to clean the coop with them around though ... they want to talk!

Hey All

i recommend Chanteclers. They come in white, partridge and buff. They are a Canadian breed developped in Quesbec in the early 1900s. They are very winter hardy and lay year round. Mine are very friendly and easy to keep.

There a several breeders in western Canada too.

Check out the Canadian breeder discussion in the Breeders section.

I've had Barred Rocks hens a couple of times and presently. They are friendly, don't have much trouble in cold weather, and they lay well.

Lately, I've been thinking about the other colors of Plymouth Rocks. They certainly come in White

Chickens with smaller type combs are generally the breeds that are the cold hardy. Pea comb and rose comb for example. White Wyandottes would be a good choice. If black and white is ok, then Light Brahmas would also be a good choice.

White Orpingtons are pretty hardy too. They are very sweet and intelligent.
Also, White Cochins would be cool. They are very cuddly!
P.S. the best way to convert her to whatever color you want is to show her pictures of different colors. I personally love splashes, blues and blacks.

I've tried showing her different chickens. Speckled, black, blue, browns and reds she is set on the grumpy chickens which was what I told her the leghorns were. Cause they are flighty thought that would discourage her. Nope she wants grumpy chickens.
