Some of my production reds lay jumbo-size eggs, others are large-X-large. I have had quite a few eggs that would not even fit into an egg carton because they were so large. And out of 6 of them, I got 6 eggs a day for over a year.
But production hybrids aren't very productive past 2 years old.
I have had a barred Rock and also an EE that laid what we called "hen grenades." The eggs are definitely jumbo; the Rock's eggs sometimes were double-yolkers, and sometimes not. Both birds definitely were big gals, sturdier in build than the others. Other than that, though, it seems to depend on the individual. Some breeds are not very good egg producers, so I wouldn't expect jumbo eggs out of them even if the hens were very large.
