So if you could only have 8 chickens, and you wanted them for eggs and pets, what would you get?

I want chickens that are a tiny bit smart (at least) and I would like to get a variety, some who are good at laying in winter (low light, not very cold here).

So what breeds would you get?

Also, if you would be so kind, specify your reasons for choosing each breed.

Thank you!!

I'm going to say Buff orpingtons...we have 2 of them now and they are just sweet hearts and love attention. They are still way to young to lay, but I hear they are great layers and hardy too! Good luck.

This is Stella and Eve!

I was thinking a variety of breeds... no? Not a good idea?

I would get at least 2 of each, maybe 4 and 4....?

Better to get all the same?

Different breeds are fine together, mix it up--have fun with it, it's what ever you want! By the way--Barred Rocks are great......I have 6 that I love and are great layers and hardy.

I have a mixed flock and I love em. I love my dominique, cochins, australorps, silver laced wyandotte, easter eggers and my light brahma before she passed away.

All are friendly, laid through the winter great, great personalities and makes for a colorful yard.

I only have 6 now. If I could trade, I would trade my andalusian (too skittish for my taste and leads the others to naughtiness. Then, I would get a dorking, an aseel, a true ameracauna or a jersey giant. I like variety in my flock.
