What color am I?

Haha! I love seeing my americaunas eggs, somedays they are more blue than green and vice versa. One of them does tend to lay more green and the other more blue. So much fun, I love the different colored eggs in my carton too. I read easter eggers can lay brown eggs though, I think I would be a little disappointed to see brown

Me too. I have 4 chicks that will for sure lay brown. So I am hoping the other 5 chicks lay colors. But I won't know until Sept or Oct. Which is right when chickens slow down in egg production, lol. It gets super cold here. And dark super early. Like, 3:50pm is night time in winter.

Yeah thats no fun, we got our chickens right before winter (texas winter of course... very mellow) and it seemed like it took them forever to start laying! It was annoying lol. We are right now dealing with heat strokes, I haven't lost any chickens yet but a few people at the feed store where I purchased mine have. You're lucky you won't have to ever worry about that!

What part of Texas? I am from North Richland Hills. Near Fort Worth. :)
Heat stroke is so sad! I am glad that is not a worry here. My only worry besides raccoons is the winter temps. The high doesn't get above freezing. And the low gets into the negatives. Last winter, we had -14 for a few days. Freaked me out to breathe outside. My snot turned into ice crystals. The strangest experience for sure. Made me miss TX, lol. This will be my first winter with chickens. I am a little nervous. I want them to be safe, yet happy.

How did you end up in WA? We are located in Richardson, there is a neighborhood right down the road from us called "North Rich" I wonder if thats north richland hills? I'm actually from Idaho (it used to get down to -8) but have been living in Houston for the last 10 years, moved up to Dallas about 4 years ago. I'm slowly making my way back out of Texas, I love snot icicles lmao. I just really miss snow falling outside a window while listening the fireplace crackle and burn. Washington is beautiful, we visited when we went to Vancouver, BC. I would be a little nervous about having chickens during a big freeze too but at least you can always put a little heated light in the coop if you had to and just make sure its sealed well along with cold hardy chickens.

As long as you can provide good ventilation without drafts actually on the chickens, most of them can handle much colder temps without problem. You can often cause more trouble than help by either sealing things up too tight or adding heat. (Says the guy in FL.)

Melishkia: My husband is from WA. North Richland Hills is about 20 miles west of Dallas. Pretty close to Arlington, where Six Flags and Ranger's baseball stadium is. I do love the snow. Right now I live about 15 mins from Couer D'Alene, ID. Are you from near there? I always spell that town wrong. French and their silent letters.

You are right. It is very beautiful in WA.

Mossyroo: Good advice. Thank you. We built our coop with lots of ventiliation. I hope it is the right balance of draft free, yet holes everywhere. I will be stuffing 9 cold hardy chickens in there. I hope their body heat will be enough for each other. There is no foam insulation, but I am hoping the osb board wrapped in cedar siding will insulate enough. Planning on sand as the bedding to keep things dry & to insulate the floor. What do you think? There are shutters that open the windows for the summer. Yet close for the winter. Plywood shutters. There is 1/2" hardwire cloth to keep bad guys out. Maybe I need a green house so they have a ground to peck in winter. Idk. First time owning chickens.

Oh I see, I was way off haha! I know where that is, we drove over that area just a couple weeks ago to pick up a puppy for my husbands parents. We were from Nampa (15 mins outside of Boise) so it was pretty much the opposite side of Idaho lol.

Oh wow, they are beautiful! Thanks for sharing, I can't wait till she grows up. What color eggs do they lay? I know they're all different but just curious
The egg color can vary. The possible colors are blue, green, pinkish, white, and basically all shades of brown. But don't get your hopes up. Its not like your going to get a blue egg one day then a green egg and so on. They usually lay one color. Maybe change once or twice but that's it.

haha, I didn't even think about that- different colored eggs every day, now that would be cool but I know its not possible. Thanks for the answer, I thought I read somewhere that they can have olive eggs (olive egger only? or easter eggers too? I'm new to the breed so maybe they are the same?) I named my little EE Olive, how fitting would it be if she laid olive colored eggs.
