found this horse looking up red sabino and it matches him pretty well so I guess that is what he is. Thank you all for helping :)

There are quite a number of color websites that explain how colors work.

http://www.animalgenetics.us/Equine/Coat_Color/Index.asp
https://www.vgl.ucdavis.edu/services/coatcolor.php
http://www.whitehorseproductions.com/equinecolor.html

edit to add - OOPs - I see you also found the Equine Tapestry site which I hadn't included... :)

I have 3 pages on my own website that pertains to the ponies we have (base colors - red(chestnut) and black; modifier agouti - bay; dilution colors - cream & silver; pattern colors - tobiano, sabino and then the roan gene). It's been more than a year since I've updated it (or more), so the color sites may have changed some...

The strawberry roans I have seen have a coat that is much darker and a lot more red. This horse does not look like a strawberry roan to me.
I agree it’s not like most. I still stand by that statement though, because of him being outside during the day and his age.

I think I read early on that he has a touch of App in him? On closer look to me it looks like in the above pic that he has snowflake pattern around his middle. Got to agree that it looks like a strawberry-ish roan pattern on the rest of him. Definitely a horse of a different color! And a very pretty boy.

I had a mare many years ago whose sire was a leopard Appaloosa and her dam was a Morgan mare. Billie was black with snow flake white hairs peppered throughout her coat. The coat patterns can get weird with cross breeding. If you shave a portion of his coat, say on his rump, down to the skin you might be able to see a spotted pattern on his skin that the hair is covering.

Have you had a chance to take him out on a test drive? If he is a true singlefooter he'll be a treat to ride!

I sure would rescue him if I were in your shoes.

X2 on champagne

Champagnes have pink or mottled skin (which this horse does not), hazel eyes (can't say for sure, but his eyes look normal dark brown in the pictures where you can see them) and hair that is diluted in color. This horse has hairs of two different colors, not diluted color. Conclusion? Not a champagne.:idunno
