What color is this silkie chick? NEW PICS POST #10

Quote:
No, grey is not blue. Grey is the same as partidge with the silver gene rather than gold. Grey is eb S Pg Co; Blue is Bl Pg Ml Co

The best greys and blues should be pure for each gene, but with silkies it is hard to tell due to the nature of the feathers. If a grey is bred to a black, it is possible for the offspring to inherit Ml from the black parent and be laced rather than penciled. Also, if the black happens to be E rather than the typical silkie eb that would override the penciling.

They are out of your black pen and will feather in white, most likely with red combs by maturity. It is the product of your blacks hiding undesirable "genes".

Do you think it could be my rooster? He is black but with gold lacing on him. I have hatched out alot of blacks this spring/summer and all have been and feathered in a very dark dark black. Every now and again I will get buff chicks from my black pen. They feather in a beautiful buff coloring with some black in the tail.

Do you think it could be the generation behind my flock? They come from a mixed colored flock but I have tried adding new blood lines to reproduce PURE colors. Everyone once in a while I will have wild colors but ONLY from my Black and Gray pens.

Rarely does a colour come from only one parent. It is usually the interaction of genes from each parent.

You might try to see if you can identify which hen (from each pen) is laying the eggs that hatch in unexpected colours. Food colouring in the vent will help you identify who is laying which egg.

Okay, I just read back through the posts. Correct me if I am wrong: You have blacks penned together and greys penned together; no greys penned with blacks. The eggs were not from the white pen.

My earlier explanation of a possibility of a grey X black doesn't fit if they weren't together.

Are these birds from your black pen? You may have one or more very dark blues instead of blacks. Also, you say he has gold lacing. Do you mean gold on his hackles, or elsewhere as well?

Yeah my blacks are only penned with black and gray only penned with gray.

I'll do the food coloring to see if I can see whos laying which.

He has gold in his hackles
If you go to my BYC page you will see pictures of my blacks.
