So I am beyond obsessed with this silkie that I hatched. What color would she be considered? She’s still young but does she look like a good breeding prospect? She was born with quite the vaulted skull and I did read that could mean a nice floofy head.

I believe she is a very cute Mille Fleur Satin Silkie. Lovely!!! 🥰

As for breeding prospect, I am not the expert, but I feel like her tail set could be a little higher, and wings could be tighter. Also you may want to research which colors to breed Mille Fleur to! The only thing I think is that all of her babies will carry mottle if the roo doesn’t carry it. If he does carry it, then half will be carriers, and half will be mottled.

Thank you! I’m super new to understanding what makes up a good breeder quality silkie. I did feel like her tail was relatively low. She’s only 8 weeks old (ish) so still a baby. Do you typically wait to see how they look as they get older or do you know when they are young if they will be breeder quality?

It kind of depends on what you are hoping for when breeding your birds. If you are going for show quality birds, then you’ll need to study the standard of perfection and breed towards that.

But if you are breeding for yourself, or for other people to have beautiful pets, then you should ensure that you aren’t breeding birds with health issues or major faults… but most people that want backyard chickens arent going to mind that the tail set is a little low, etc. Especially if they have other lovely qualities.

What I do, is I will still breed a bird if it has qualities that I am working towards, but I try to pair them with a mate that is better in the area that they lack. If that makes sense. So breeding a bird with loose wings to a bird with tighter wings, etc. Again, I am not currently breeding towards showing or the standard of perfection. And I don’t sell my birds as such. I am working on my own breeding project right now and utilizing what I can. But your little girl is so pretty, and will make beautiful babies for you, especially with the right mate!
