What could do this?!?!

Usually a Weasle will kill everything it can get ahold of, they kill for sport. I would suspect a skunk or opossum as they are interested in the eggs. A live trap is your best bet, baited with canned cat food or a cracked boiled egg. You will need a small tarp or blanket in case you catch a skunk. (I work at a Zoo and we catch them all the time) Believe it or not as long as you are calm and stay quiet they will not spray when you approach. Just walk up and lay the tarp over the trap then you can pick it up and carry it. Call animal control if you live in town or if not you will need to shoot the animal while it is in the trap. Do not transoprt it somewhere else to release it. In most areas it is illegal to transport wild animals across county lines and anything closer and the animal will just find it's way back as they are territorial.
I am sorry for your loss, hugs to your kiddo.

If skunk and is caught, be forwarned - keep your dog(s) back while it is caged to avoid smelly complications.

I would guess Opposum, or possibly a skunk, Raccoons kill for sport and not nessarily food, Opposums mostly go for the eggs or small chicks.

I'm so so sorry. It sounds like you made Luna as comfortable as possible after her injury and as she passed. Know she loved you back.

I'm trying to figure out what killed one of our juvenile Buckeyes. If you read down this section under "my canibal flock" I assumed it was the other chickens or ducks...but people on here have me wondering if it was a weasle or rat...it was horrible.

Huge hugs to you. I'm so sorry about Luna and her little ones.

Sorry you lost Luna. Poor thing. I live on a large property next to a stream. I had a rooster and a hen attacked and their beak was chopped off and the meat on their head and shoulders was eaten. I think we interrupted the predator as it was late evening, but dark, and the chickens were stacked one on top of another in a corner under the coop. I surmise that the rooster came out to protect the hens and got it first, the hen then followed or was grabbed. Since then, I no longer let them free range but have a fenced in area with chicken netting on top, and they are locked up tight at night. I think because we are close to a creek, a mink was the culprit. We have caught one here before when trying to catch groundhogs.
