I went out this morning and found interesting and confusing sight. In the driveway, there was a pile of organs, the very tip of a face with two bulging eyes(brain was gone) and a white feather. The creature looked to be some sort of rat or a squirrel but it was hard to tell.

The part that confused me was the feather. Will birds eat everything but the organs? I thought that something may have eaten a mouse there, and then went after the chickens, but they are all there and no injuries.

The gross thing is... CHICKENS will eat mice. You say you went out early morning, so I assume maybe the chickens were not out yet? If they were out, it may have been one or more of your sweet, darling girls that did the killing. LOL
I've seen dead mice in the run, but never actually seen a chicken eating a mouse, although I have heard stories here. I know cats will leave a certain part of the animal untouched- can't recall the name, but it's the part that holds the stomach acid.Chickens would probably do the same.

Our cats will leave a mouse like that, they usaully leave the gall bladder (little green thing) also.

This was in my driveway, about 100yrds from the chicken coop and they do not free range, so I know it was not the chickens.

I thought it might be an owl, but I read they swallow almost whole. The thing that confuses me the most was the feather, I have no idea where it came from.
