What could have ripped up chain link fence like this?

I know this might be too late to help since your coop is already built but my coop is built on stilts about a foot and a half high so if something was trying to dig through the bottom it would be totally exposed.

The run is also on stilts and the property is fenced in. We did this cause last time we had chickens 20 yrs ago something dug through the bottom of our coop and slaughtered half our chickens. I was so upset I rehomed the rest and its taken me this long to try again.
I was lured back by the polish and frizzles they are soo cute.

Well , hubby built our coop on cinder blocks and he dug 1 ft. deep all the way around the perimeter of the coop and run , and buried 1 inch steel wire about a ft. deep . Hopefully nothing will dig thru that .

1st. sign of problems we will pour concrete around the whole perimeter ...

I am so sorry for your loss . I know we would be devestated if this happened to our flock .

So sorry for the your loss, it really is hard to imagine that an animal can rip through that kind of fence. What most people suggest when using this type of fence is run 1/4 to 1/2 inch hardware cloth around the bottom. If the bottom is open, put 6" of that cloth into the ground, and curl it towards the outside. I hope you don't wait years before trying again...you can get all the information you need here!

Been there done that. Im sorry for you - I know how it feels.

I dunno what it is, Id say coyote if an animal. But next time install some game cameras, clean up the traps and oil the gun.

When you find out, PLEASE let us know.

Please keep in mind Preditors are now thrown out of their natural cycle of doing things,
Habitat is being destroyed, encroached upon, or flat out burned away by wild fires.
No Preditor can be held to our way of thinking , they are foraging for food when they can, not when we normally expect them.
Here in NH we are seeing an increase of Healthy Skunk, Coon, Coyotes and Bear out during the Day.
And in places least expected.
Not too many weeks ago there was a huge Black Bear up a tree in one of our Major Citys, made headlines and news programs for days.

Unfortunately as the need for more Human Housing is needed the Animals are going to come in closer and closer, making it dicy and dangerous for domestic Animals and Humans , not to forget the Preditors and Other WildLife.

We are building mine on cinderblocks, and I am planning on doing exactly what your DH did with digging the entire perimeter. I do have one question: you said 1 inch steel wire- what is that? I was planning on using chicken wire like I saw on some pictures on BYC. Do you mean 1" hardware cloth?

That's also my exact plan of action- if there is even the slightest sign of something digging, I'm concreting all the way around!

Well , I am calling it steel wire ( like whatever ) lol . Its alot more sturdy then regular chicken wire , maybe just a better gauge ? HARD to CUT .... DH was having to FORCE with heavy duty wire cutters .

That would be pretty creepy!
