What did this???

The critters which eat the heads and leave the body which I know of are: Racoons and Great Horned Owl.

Of course, I don't know if you have either of those in Oz.

Possums are ominvorous and will certainly eat eggs. Wether they eat chickens or not seems to be different from possum to possum.

I doubt it was a cat. Cats kill for the hunt. However a hungry feral cat could have done it but it would have eaten the meat...not the head. I love cats especially my 6 and my 3 ferals so maybe I'M bias.

I'm thinking with the head being missing either a bird of prey or coon (more likely a coon).

I'm sorry for your loss.

Hi Southern Chick, the head was there lying on the ground chewed on.
Some of the breast was eaten but not much.
We dont have Coons here in Australia.

We have raccoons, but you guys don't have them naturally...
You have introduced weasel family members...they were wiping out the kiwis

so they started trapping them.
Norway rats, ferrets, stoats, foxes and feral cats, dogs and pigs were all introduced to New Zealand.

Sorry it happened. Give her a nice burial. I've had 2 deaths in my flock, 1 during shippment as a tiny babe and another by predator. I bury mine in the chicken yard so they'll always be together.
