My husband left our two little banties in the chicken run with their little "house" so they could get some exercise space last night. He felt they would be safe.He used very thick gauge wire and cemented it underground when he built the run and it has a wired top as well, so whatever did this would have either had to be very small, or somehow got them over to the fence and killed them through it. Anyway...my husband came outside this morning and saw something he said that looked like the size of a cat running away, but cannot be certain that is what did this. He then noticed our two little chickens were dead. He said that the rooster looked untouched, but my Silkie was pretty much just head, neck, and wings. I went outside this morning to survey the crime scene, and our little chickens were both against the fence. My Silkie looks like her insides were eaten out. Her head is still there and the wings are still there. The area that was eaten is facing the inside of the run rather than the outside. Some skin is hanging off the back bone. There is a crushed up egg about 2-3 feet inside the run along with some organs as well. The rooster looks like something started to bite/eat him on the back, but he's intact for the most part. I see several feathers inside the run, with a bunch against the side of the fence close to the area where I found my Silkie. I have no idea what did this. My gut says something got inside the run, but what? It definitely was small.
My husband feels awful. We normally keep them in a cage inside the coop (we have too many roosters right now and didn't want them killing our banties). I know he was trying to do something nice by letting them have more space to run, but sadly they are gone.
