What did you do in the garden today?

Potatoes are the same way. That's why you're not supposed to eat green potatoes... The green is part of the signals that they're developing the same toxin. Eating green potatoes raw can make you very, very sick.

Peppers and eggplant are also nightshades.

Also, I presume it was a joke but I wouldn't genuinely give a dog alcohol to get em to vomit. :P Peroxide is MUCH safer/more reliable. Our dogs get into all sorts of stuff we shouldn't so we actually have the vet-suggested dosage for making dogs vomit written on a note on our fridge....

Not to mention why would you waste the vodka like that!? Peroxide is much cheaper. XD

I always knew this,,,, I'm quite sure that all potatoes should be cooked, never eaten raw.
Another interesting item is Kidney beans. They must be cooked also. Those in a can are cooked. Rice is also interesting. Uncooked and we can not absorb the nutrients.

:goodpost: Interesting article also states that eating beans is good for my intestines. Does not mention that it may not be great for the nostrils of those nearby. :gig
Back to potatoes,,,,,,, I have no desire to try them raw. I do like to take New potatoes, or Yukon Gold, or Red potatoes, and ,,,,, Cut into halves,,, Dip open face into my mixture of seasonings,,, Place that side onto hot griddle pan in my BBQ grill. Short time later, they are done, and :drool:drool:drool
I might have a pix of some on the grill if I search enough.

I do have Deadly Nightshade that grows in my fence line. I always keep pulling out the growth. Pretty much impossible to control totally since I wont be going into neighbors yard pulling up his weeds. In all these years,,,,, none of my pets, including chickens shown any interest in snacking on any of those plant parts. Including those delicious looking berries.
Tomato is in the nightshade family. The leaves are poisonous to chickens. My chickens have wandered thru/near my container grown tomatoes in the past. Never shown any interest in the greens, but would certainly eat the ripe fruit.
That's good information. I was thinking about putting a container for potatoes near the chicken run. Potatoes are in the nightshade family as well and I was concerned the chickens might try to nibble at the leaves.

Yes beans and any other food high in fiber is good for you. Keeps your intestines and arteries clean and running smooth.

I grew sweet potatoes all parts are safe for chickens and I absolutely love them. They are part of the morning glory family.
I thought perfect! This will be a patch that the chickens can have at my little sacrificial lamb for the monster’s to get at. Didn't even fence them at all!! Planted them on the side of my dirt pile.
The girls barely pecked a leaf or two.
UNTIL~I went to harvest as soon as I started with my pitch fork. We had a digging festival. Had a few potatoes with some pecks so we ate those first.
The taste and texture (so creamy w/no butter) was so different from store bought I was amazed!

Oh man, I would like to grow sweet potatoes, but our growing season is short and our soil is chilly which makes it tough to do. I've heard that the vines are really great snacks for rabbits, very nutrient dense and great for growing kits to processing size. I may have to look into how to grow some in future years.
