What did you do in the garden today?

LOL. Don't be. Haven't turned on the irrigation yet. Was getting ready to when DS was savaged by a run away patio umbrella. LOL. But the time I was done chasing down and skinning the offender and icing the victim, I was spent.

Does lettuce turn bitter when it bolts? I've never had enough that it ever had the chance before!

Depending on the type. I’ve noticed that my romaine has a bit stronger flavor more like grocery store lettuce when picked at or near bolting. I just adjust the dressing to “complement “ the stronger flavor. I just picked my last 2 heads this morning and it tastes OK.
Have to keep the stalk areas out to limit the bitter, not quite like store bought. I don't do good with lettuce here, only couple varieties are standby. I've grown quite a few, got a few fancy ones from baker creek last yr they were o.k.
My favorite and not as good or crisp or mild as store bought but grows good always can use is black seeded simpson, loose leaf. Never had it bolt either, just pick what I want when I want it. One planting in the spring and one a little later will last us all summer selectively picking leaves.

Very hot here. I’m watering all the time, it seems. The chickens are okay; sometimes too busy lying in a hole in the dirt to come to the fence for the weeds I bring!

Crazy zucchini and cukes taking off - have to check them twice a day. They grow an inch as soon as I turn my back. Also one of the broccoli plants is getting a head! Sweet corn is about 3.5 feet high. Bean is blooming and peas are almost ready. These raised beds are exceeding expectations!

I didn’t want to buy so many bags of compost and dirt so I gathered up a lot of rotting wood from in the woods to put at the bottom of the beds. I didn’t grow beets or carrots, and I put potatoes in containers, because I thought it would be crowded in there. Everything else, though, seems to be doing great. And it will be better next year. More rotten!

11pm and still feels like 98°

Hens had frozen peas with dinner.

12 foot umbrella frame is in the trash. I saved the fabric.

One more day of hideous heat.

I'm ready for a break.

Tomatoes still need tied.

Irrigation for the lawn is now up and running. Have some cracks here that are 3 inches wide and go 2 feet deep! Man I love the prairie!
