What did you do in the garden today?

Good 'sizzling hot' morning gardeners. The overnight low was 79F. The humidity is so disgustingly high I can feel the prickly heat developing. I felt bad about closing the coop up last night. I think it's better to leave the doors wide open through this heat. The run is secure and I'm sure the hens would appreciate a bit more of a cross breeze. Nothing happening but growing in the garden. I watered the new grass and my sad little flowers in the front yard. My big plans for the day is to go to the grocery store and enjoy the AC there while I shop. Then heading home to my window AC's. Since yard work is out of the question I plan to get a little more cleaning done inside today. This heat wave is supposed to break on Monday, thank goodness. The older hens and my rooster are handling it well enough, but the little BR's have not fully developed wattles and combs so they're having a bit of a challenge with the heat. I gave them all longer "play in the grass" time yesterday and will do the same today. Have a great day everyone and stay as cool as possible.

I make mud puddles for them to play in, hose off the grass in shady areas for them to plop and lay in. I made screen doors out of hardware cloth for the coop too.

This is our last day of this for a while. We're on day 21 of over 85 and day 8 of over 95, day 7 of near 100 or over. I am zapped and I know the livestock is ready for a break. I haven't seen the cattle come out of the coulees for days.

Our last day is tomorrow. I can’t complain too much, as this is the first real heat wave we’ve got so far. It barely got to 90F yesterday but the humidity was disgusting. I’ve been getting by with minimal cooking. Running out of ideas but did come up with a black bean, mango and jicama salad for tonight’s dinner. I may try to grill something quick tomorrow night. Stay cool everyone.

I left the man door open for the first time last night. There is a screen made of hardware cloth, but its not super secure. I hung a fan off it. They looked great this am so I guess they're ok. Gonna go put some ice out there.

I sprayed my maters with the copper stuff this am. It was very hard on my back (I have 4 busted disks) so I'm not sure how well I got them coated, but I hope it helps with the blight.

Let us know how it works. I’m not sure, but there’s something going on with my tomatoes. It just might be the heat. My run is encased with 1/2 inch HC and corrugated metal roofing so it’s secure. So it should be fine to leave the coop doors open.

I’m out of town at my daughter’s, but DH tells me my chickies are panting. I suggested he get a spray bottle and spritz them lightly, but he wasn’t too keen as they are in a hard-to-reach place.

Our run is secure and I’m going to have him leave the door open tonight. It cooled to about 75 last night but the daytime is brutal. They have a little tray of ice to peck at. Yesterday they had a few bites of frozen corn but they weren’t too interested.

The weather is even worse down here in the Hudson Valley. 95 and stupid bad humidity. Thank goodness for A/C in the car!

Super hot!

Garden is doing well. I did dust yesterday with a pesticide type dust bc we were getting lots of cucumber beetles (it seemed overnight) and last year they really impacted many of our garden plants in a bad way. So, I was hoping we dodged them and wouldn't have to use any chemicals, but unfortunately that did not occur. The packaging of the dust made it difficult to "lightly" dust them. it was either nothing or a whole lot.

First tomato (Champion II) picked today!!
