What did you do in the garden today?

I left the man door open again last night, & will again tonight. Todd went down to open the auto pop door after it shut last night & they were all roosting in the run, they didn't want to go inside! I was thinking cuz it was hot, then I remembered I turned the fan up to high for the first time & well...they are chickens!

Mine hate they spray bottle. It’s how I keep them away from things. Mud puddles are good. Chickens expel heat through their feet and waddles. Mine will stand in the mud and nap. A slow running hose ... mine will drink & drink like the water is somehow better than what’s in their waterers.
Mine like puddle water. Preferably worm flavored, over clean fresh water. The goobers.

Heat broke at 2am with a massive clap of thunder. The rains came. At 9am we are at 4.2 inches and still counting!:hitI mean Come On!

Yikes! We get storms today. Supposedly around 3/4", but they have been wildly off on precipitation amounts before.

Chickens are now at fair, so they will likely greatly appreciate the break in the heat. Happy that their cages are all in shady areas - none are in full sun at any point. The fair staff do a good job of shading the animals, however, sometimes a cage or part of a cage is in full sun for a short period of time, which is what happened last year. The BJG is pretty big, so had to be moved to a larger cage in another area bc he did not fit into the regular chicken cages. Dropped off my culinary submissions this morning - they go in an open air building, which means about 95F!!! Caramels were one item I submitted...in 95F heat they will be judged (LOL).

Garden looks good. as @Wee Farmer Sarah has experienced, my pole beans are just growing, no flowers yet (I thought I had seen some, but I think it was just the growing tips I must have mistaken for buds never having grown pole beans before). The bush beans (nearly all are for drying for soup purposes) are coming along nicely - pods look full, and some are taking on colors, as they should.

Any idea as to what this is? I think it is a melon, spouse though maybe squash. It was a volunteer plant in the compost bin that we let grow. There is some white powder on it from when I dusted the plants due to cucumber beetles.

Spaghetti squash is the most likely. Now I just need to figure out when it is able to be picked!
