What did you do in the garden today?

Yes I got the blue link... very good.. I may not be able to do composting but I will give it a good try...

If you grow non poisonous plants, drink coffee or tea and eat fruits/veg you can compost. Have hay? Horse poop, goat poop, cow poop or chicken poop? You can compost. Once you have a pile going it's pretty easy. Except in your environment you'll need to water it probably once a week or so like I do.

I had read that Catch 22 composting thread - it made me laugh at myself because all I do is dump EVERYTHING in a pile & pitchfork it once in a while, LOL. My numbers are so far off, I'm sure. But nature will do her thing eventually. I did get the idea to add my shredded paper to it though! I really should go water it, its dry, but I'm waiting for DH to finish the gutter/rain barrel system I'm putting on the coop so I don't have to haul water. Or more water than I already do for the girls.

I picked some veggies last night to bring in for a coworker & pulled up the last of the lettuce that bolted. I had thrown more seed down but it's just too hot for it, even in the shade under the trellis. I watered the carrots, melons, cukes & onions.

I have a bunch of watermelons now & one that's between softball & football size! How do you know when it's time to pick watermelon??

Thump the melon, it should sound hollow but feel heavy. Then twist to pick it, if it comes off easily it's ripe. Also, any melon with bee tracks, as in any kind of melon, is the sweetest. The bees know!

ETA my compost pile gets the same treatment. I dump all the stuff in and whatever comes out I use.

love grapefruit my self... peel them and eat them like an orange.

Ever candy the peels? I bet you'd love them too.

I do candied lemon slices and orange rinds right after Thanksgiving and then I can use chopped orange rinds in the holiday stollen I make a few weeks before Christmas. Sooooo much nicer than gloppy commercially prepared candied citrus rind! ...IF I can find it. It doesn't seem to be as much a standard holiday grocery store item as it once was. And I miss the citron. LOVE the flavor of citron!

When they're prepared and dried I dip the lemon slices and remaining orange rind in chocolate for gifts. But I bet you'd enjoy the grapefruit rinds simply candied if you enjoy the fruit so much.

I will have grey water or Dux water.....

I stopped using rain barrel water from roof runoff when I found out how many viral issues came from wild birds along with it. We're on a major migration route, so I don't need that in the hen house.

watermelon that is ready to pick will let you pick it. The stem will easily give way. If it's not ready, it will hang tight.

Good for you to have lost so much weight and to be taking great care of yourself!
I had Gastric surgery to help out. I still have about 150 to loose... Thats why I am cautious about doing heavy work liike turning a compost pile.... Plus I am 64... We live a long time in our family... I just spent the last twelve years away from my home to take care of my Grandma... She is now 103 and we just moved her to a residence home.
So I am still a little tied to here.... and when I go home I iwll have a boat load of work to do to make the house liveable again.

The rain barrel water is ONLY for my garden & compost pile - not the chickens. I figure I wouldn't want to drink it so I'm not making them!
