What did you do in the garden today?

Yesterday, I brought my mini Meyer's Lemon tree up from the basement where it has been forced into dormancy: dark, cold, dry. I harvested all of the lemons off of it, (all 5 of them) gave it a good drink of water, washed it's pot. Will fertilize it in a day or so, and put it in the South facing living room window for the remainder of the winter. My gardening effort has been reduced to daydreaming about warm sun, and playing in the soil.

Planted some Garlic. Not real sure how it will do, looked to be in rough shape. Gave it a good bed of mulch on top so time will tell. Pulled the sod off the new garden expansion, and added some horse manure / mulch mix on top to be tilled in come thaw. Turned the compost pile and added the sod to it (grass side down).

Hi gardening folks.
We recently bought a new home. Our soil is super sandy. I am trying to come with ways to improve my soil for free. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance

Mulch with anything you have... Grass clippings, leaves, cardboard, newspaper, chicken bedding, anything that with break down. Mulch will creat a new environment for microbes, bug and worms... Those critters will breakdown the soil additives and feed your plants. The mulch layer will help the sand retain moister as we... Over time adding mulch yearly will build you great soil. Do they log near by? And mulch the waste? That stuff is great if you can get it for free.

Another thought dude, root crops usually like loose soil you could focus on roots in your cooler seasons. Don't forget to rotate you crops, and research polyculture and permaculture for great ways to set up your garden in your climate and soil conditions... Man I am going to stop now, or it going to look like Tara hijacked my post.

I have clay soil and am trying raised garden beds... improving the soil takes YEARS so this is a quick fix!

What some people do to improve soil quality and fertility is rotating pastures. For example one year lot A is a garden and lot B is a pasture. The pasture gets plowed up by the animals hooves and the manure gets worked into the soil. Then, next year, lot A is pasture and lot B is a garden. The animals can eat away any weeds, stalks, dead plants that accumulates in the garden. Then, the old pasture can be turned into a garden and will be fertile and plowed. Obviously, you have to keep livestock in order to do this, which isn't always practical for hobby gardeners.
