What did you do in the garden today?

Waiting for the snow to melt!

Me too

I also do vermicomposting. Right now my set up is very basic and pretty ugly but if you click on my link you will see I have future plans that look MUCH better. I just have to wait to do them until I have french drains otherwise I'd worry that they would get flooded, and I have to do them away from the house (in case water enters and stands there).

Nice. I have plans in a book on the subject for a verma compositor that double as a coffee table, very neat... And my birds would enjoy any excess worms... Melt snow melt!

That's cool. I'd worry about smell with an indoor one honestly. I know my chicks in the brooder smell!

I can't speak from experience but it is suppose to totally oder free if managed properly. That would be pretty cool... Just toss your dinner scraps in your coffee table lol
I know my outside ones are, but I would worry about fruit flies etc inside...

Good to know, ( fruit flies

they get into my fermenting seeds sometimes ) someday I'll dig out the book and share the design here.
That would be cool! We need a coffee table anyway =)
I hate flies. We have a bunch in the garage and that led to spiders!

My worms live in a bucket with ventilation holes down in my basement. The winter temp is not the best down there for them. My original 2 colonies died from neglect (cold temps). This one is going strong from red worms I gathered under some cardboard in the garden. But, there is no odor. If you over feed them, and don't cover the scraps, you'd get some odor from that. I like keeping them down stairs, b/c if the occasional issues with fruit flies crops up, it's easy to just move them outside (weather permitting) until the issue has been eliminated.

For me out of sight is out of mind Id totally forget about them if they were in my basement plus it's a basement suite and my mom lives in it... Lol.
I could probably do a bucket set up in my spare room and not neglect them and do what you do, kick them out if problems arise when temperatures permit. I was offered my friends worms the other day I think I will take her up on that... The coffee table is a project for "some day".
