What did you do in the garden today?

Flowers are still looking ok on the deck.

Rain seems to be slowing thankfully.

I posted this in the other thread but...

Thanks all, she's gone. She stopped drinking and eating altogether & would barely even open her eyes, it was time. My neighbors came over with the cone & helped as we've never had to do it before.

She was very thin, I think shed been hiding her illness for a while, as I understand they do.

very sorry hard to end if when right I have barred 7 I think may be time she is frail but molt has been real tough on her

Good morning all. So sorry for your loss @Sueby. The rain has finally stopped here. I didn't spend too much time in the basement yesterday as the sump pump was running like crazy to keep up with the deluge. No more mountain lion sightings, so that's a good thing. We're expecting a slight warm up to the mid 60's for a couple of days then back to normal seasonal temps in the 50's and 30's overnight. I still have one dahlia that is clinging to her leaves so I have to wait before digging them all up. I'm so jealous of both @karenerwin and @Acre4Me that you are still harvesting stuff. Especially those green beans. I've looked at the "fresh" beans in the grocery store and they don't come close to the homegrown ones. Oh well, maybe next year I'll get a good crop. Have a great day everyone.

Today: sunny and 65F! A day to go outside!!

tomorrow: cloudy and 66F!

likely our last really nice weather for a few months. Hoping for some sunny days and blue skies this winter! Helps to handle the mostly cloudy or overcast days we get in the Midwest.

Plan to work on expanding the run roof. Posts are set in the ground, metal roof panels waiting in the barn. Not sure how far we will get before winter fully sets in, but even 6 more feet will be helpful since then the roof will cover the whole deck and stairs. Currently have 6ft on south side, and about 6 feet on north side (pic is of north side of the run). So about half the run is roofed when including the elevated coop.

Look at that proud rooster watching over his girls!! He’s a BJG.

I love that picture. I have multiple roosters and they all seem to have two or three hens that follow each one around. One boy has a single hen and they are always together. If I have an Alpha, it would have to be my 6 month old Fayoumi, Tut. But he shares the duties with the much smaller BBR/barnyard cross rooster Timmy who is about half his size and twice his attitude. I just love to see good roosters taking care of their girls.

I just took a big fat grub and a big red worm out to the run and called the birds. Tut immediately appeared from around the corner of the coop leading his two ladies over for the treats. Of course he had to take the grub from me and then give it to one of the hens. It's so funny. I told DH look, I don't know chicken but I imagine he is saying to them. HERE! Look at the food I found for you...never mind the treat lady gave it to me, I found it......will you let me mate with you now?....maybe later?....HEY COME BACK HERE! SHE JUST GAVE ME A WORM TO GIVE YOU! AREN'T I a GREAT ROOSTER!

So the last of my 'garden chores' are done. I planted 8 peach pits with the hopes of growing at least a few heirloom type peach trees next spring. I have about 8 such trees now that give me what some call a 'wild' peach. They are about the size of a large apricot, sweet as sugar and make the best jam you have ever spread on a slice of bread. They also seem to be a bit more disease resistant and although I did have a fungal infection on a few of them two years back, they seemed to shake off after a single spraying of fungicide.

Kinda sad that that represents the true end of the growing season for me. But isn't that the true nature of gardening? Even in late fall, looking forward to what JUST might grow next spring.

And not a moment too soon. We have snow in the forecast over the next 4 days.

Snow in Missouri for Halloween. I've seen everything now.
