Ugh, it's so bad. The fires ACTUALLY keep making me cry...

Consider this: nature is a cycle of birth, life, death and rebirth. Fire is natures way of cleaning stuff up so the earth can regenerate. Yes, fire destroys, but when things recover, they're often healthier and stronger.

An example would be bark beetles in our forests in the US. If the fires that naturally happened weren't stopped by humans, the beetles would die in the fires, pine cones would explode and seeds would disperse, rains would come and healthy new trees would sprout and grow. Since humans stop those fires to protect their junk, the environment suffers.

The fires will pass and while life may change, it doesn't have to be worse than it was before. It might even get better.

Good frosty morning again gardeners. Not as cold this morning, but still a little nippier than normal November temps. The forecasters are telling us the temps will get back to normal soon, but I'm not holding my breath. I picked up one more clear shower curtain for the chicken run so they should be all set for the really cold stuff. I finally boxed up my dahlia tubers @Sueby. I used sand. Now, how do I add moisture to this? I thought a wet paper towel to raise the humidity but not soak them??? One small step toward sanity - I kept feeling a cold draft in my living room and I couldn't figure it out. The windows were closed and the fireplace flue was closed. I finally noticed this morning that one of the windows wasn't locked. That tiny bit of a gap was letting in the cold air. I really thought I was losing it. Warmer now. The other treat I got was seeing not one, but three new leaves sprouting up from my "Mother in law's tongue" plant (zeylanica) that I had transferred from my sunroom to the mantel in the living room. I'm so excited. I think I'll put it in a bigger pot this Spring.
Welcome to our gardening thread @Chickinie. Sorry you have to deal with the fires. I remember when I lived in Eastern Washington the fire seasons were always nasty. I was lucky that I didn't have to evacuate. Although one year the fires came close to where it was almost time to go. But as @igorsMistress said, the fires do a "cleanse" so new, healthy life can be restored. Please don't give up on your garden. Try putting water directly on the base of your plants with a watering can to get them through this rough patch. It's hard work but it should help. Have a great day everyone.

The thing is that it's the rainforests burning! The fire's not supposed to be able to sustain in some places that have burnt...

The Koalas are burning! And I don't even really care much about Koalas until I see one or hear about how few there are left... Or that they are all inbred now... Or that a dog attacked one. Disease this, hit by car that.

Poor everything that lived in the millions of hectares...

I don't even think about the animals and it makes me cry. It's kinda weird. I think I am crying over the trees.

GARDENING:
It's so dry in the backyard.
Nearly running out of tank water.
Thinking about giving up on the veggie garden.
The air is a smoke haze because the WHOLE country is on fire.
No rain forecast for the rest of the week.
Had no rain for forever.
The sun and the heat burns everything.
Hopeless.

Welcome to the gardeners thread California here is in the same burning some started here but realized the same green folk that stopped logging caused the tinder box and started fixing our forest's as possible but yes as horrible and scary fires are in is the worlds regeneration that is my humble opinion

Forgot to mention yesterday that I went to meet up with a guy from "meet ups gardening group". A teacher I used to work with knows the guy so I felt safe going by myself. Anyway he gave me a bunch of seed starter trays. They are black plastic with lots of rows with small holes, about the size of my pinky finger, you use them to start your seeds in them. He also gave me some other trays that you use once you transplant the seeds into the 4 pack or 6 pack plastic containers ( like the ones you buy small plants in at the store). He also gave me a couple of stacks of the 6 packs.
I'm going to give most of them to the guy at school that runs the gardening club at school.
Back to grinding deer meat today. I really wish I had an electric meat grinder!

I have empathetic feelings and all, but they usually come with more specific things..

Must be because I hate development so much because it destroys habitat and the environment, and they do it like there is no tomorrow. Then all the arsonist get together to start over 100 fires in the worst drought ever - get nothing for it.

Half anger, I think.

I just hope it can recover! I use to like going for walks in the forests, even though I hardly ever did because it's out of the way. So I planted my own at home . Got over 50 types of trees on 3 acres and going to by like 100 more some day. Gotta wait till they are definitely established, it's a mammoth effort watering them. I use watering cans so I get exercise.
