I don’t believe you are over thinking it. You’re more likely excited about learning a different variety of chicken. Just a thought.

Our chicken area is not super huge and starts 20' from our back door. DH probably won't know anything till after the quarantine period. ha ha!
I texted the breeder and asked if he had any roos for sale. He does... gulp Forming the plan that takes me that much closer to leaping into trouble. Hopefully he will have ugly roosters.

Oh, I wanted to see if anyone had any opinions on my choice of chicks for spring - I've decided on Buff Orpingtons & Golden Laced Wyandottes.

I want layers that can handle the cold/snow & something that has a chance of going broody & will be able to be integrated with my red sex links eventually.

Opinions?

I am more concerned with chickens that can take the heat. Most of the birds that we can get in the US are cold hearty, except for some of the fancy or bantam breeds. Chickens can keep themselves warm easily. Keep cool in a humid summer is a different story.

The Orps will almost surely go broody for you, ours did, their first year. All 8 of them if I remember correctly, after laying for just a few weeks . They were excellent mothers. Two of them co-mommied 4 chicks. But then they spent all summer raising the chicks so I got no more eggs out of them. Their second year they had apparently satisfied those parenting urges though, and none of them broodied up again so, yay! EGGS!

I know zilch about SLW except they are gorgeous.

Windy and cold day. Lots of rain last night. Tonight it’s very windy with flurries, low of 12F. Glad we got a little work done on the outdoor stuff before this cold, windy, wet weather hit.

@WthrLady, I made the Risgrot again. My kid loves it. We had it with breakfast and later on I hear kid rummaging around for a snack...was specifically looking for the Risgrot! Lol, apparently a recipe I’ll make a few more times! But it was perfect for the cold morning. Tonight I’ve made yeast semolina waffles to rise overnight, then cook for breakfast.
