What did you do in the garden today?

Good morning gardeners! Happy Saturday. Another cold day here but tomorrow the weather improves and we get above freezing. All of next week looks warmer as well with a bit of rain mixed in. With any luck, I'll get to pick up my compost tumbler today or tomorrow! Seeing all of the asparagus talk has got me thinking about trying to grow some of it. My wife eats it fairly frequently and I'll eat it on occasion.
Saturday morning Question... I'm considering adding 2 blueberry bushes to the garden this year. Previously I've on'y done them in containers but had 3-4 of them. This is about 2009-2-14 time frame. I know they need to polinate off one another but how far can they be from each other? If I put one on each side of the veggie garden which is 32' long, is that ok or should the be closer? Most of the fruit will be for fresh eating or smoothies, which variety have you had good luck with? TIA

Good morning all. Happy Leap Day! That's about our weather for today @Farmdog267 however it doesn't warm any until Monday here. Fortunately the winds have died down. I let the chickens out when I was cleaning the coop yesterday and they could barely wait until I was finished so they could get out of the wind. Even with the plastic sheeting on the run walls it gets breezy inside the run as well. I forgot to mention that the other day when I went to the dentist there was a flock of Robins in his yard. They don't come this far north for anything but Spring. With the temps being uncomfortably cool, I thought this would be a good day to finish picking up the rest of the boards for the new garden bed. This way I can put it together when it's comfortable to work outside. And if you have the room @Farmdog267, plant asparagus. If you and your wife like it the initial cost of planting will be recovered in one to two years. Asparagus is not the cheapest vegetable in the grocery store. I'm not an expert on blueberries, however I have never seen them growing alone. They are usually in a fairly close row or grouping. I'm forcing myself to wait at least another week before starting any more seedlings. I think I'm more excited about planting than Christmas. Have a great day everyone.

I redid mine, put in 5 fence posts, 1 for a gate to put 2x4 48" fence all the way around it. Chickens can scoot right through a 4x4 fence, found that out. I am using the same wood chips I get from the tree trimmers and covering it 2" thick now. I tried no till and chips thin last year and weeding was almost not existent. I just throw all the old cherry, reg. tomatoes and peppers over the fence and the chickens love that.

Can't plant until May 1st here, but they way this year is going its going to be mid april.

Well we made it to 68 today but it was SO windy, it was hard to work outside. We moved the hive back into the yard. We got the pasture separated with the temporary poles, but the fence tape will have to wait for a non windy day. The alpacas didn't get it though and thought the poles WERE a fence. Dorks.

Made some spicy chicken soup for supper in the crock pot. I didn't get much else done. My pile of sewing is embarassingly high. But I'm out of starch, so It'll have to wait.

Getting starting soils going for seed shipment that should be here in a couple of weeks.
Trees should be here by april.

@penny1960 how was the meeting with other chicken folk??

@Farmdog267 I love asparagus!! My poor husband rarely gets any of it :lau
I do offer him some asparagus sometimes  but he usually says no thanks. Not because he doesn't like, but because he knows how much I love it!!
I'm sure your wife would be very happy if you grew asparagus for her. :love
