What did you do in the garden today?

Cloudy and overcast, and still cold. However nice spring signs are here:

My Hellebore (aka Lenten Rose) are blooming:

"Pink Fizz" - nowhere near to blooming.

Strawberries overwintered in the garage and are looking good. Alpine type on the left, and a June bearer on the right.

Fig tree, which is not even a year old is looking good! We planted it directly in the ground bc this is the south side of the house, so it gets lots of sun and stays a bit warmer bc of the brick. There is a large bush to the west, helping to protect it from winter winds.

Our new compost structure. Eventually, it will be full of compost, but the plywood roof is for the temporary Rooster enclosures once we get cage doors on the front. We need to separate the 2 younger ones from the girls for now.

That's looking great! A lot cleaner than mine with your new lumber. I repurposed all the lumber mine is made with. I started transferring the second bin of compost today. I'm really happy with the look of the compost. Aside from some clumps of sod I dug up in the fall and tossed in there, it's mostly black gold. It's heating up again too now that it's come out of winter dormancy. I still need to finish moving the second half of the pile. It will likely fill the bin. The 3rd pile I am not moving from the old bins to the new ones. It wouldn't make sense since I will be using it all on the garden. This 2nd pile is likely going to be used this summer around plants as they grow to mulch and feed. Come Fall, I'll have three full bins again though.

Looks good.

I returned probably 300 live bees that were in the various bags I brought in late last night. I also added a third liquid feed and some water bags for thermal mass up in their attic. If they can just make it to next week when we get into the 70s, they'll be happy camper. And If I have just ONE drone in there, I might get a new queen.

Who knows.

Well, I had plans to plant more of the strawberry roots and to move the cherry bushes, but when I went outside I discovered that it is cold and raining! 😞
That did not stop me from butchering one of the spare roosters ( much to his disappointment, I'm sure). Tomorrow is supposed to be 64 and sunny but not until I'm supposed to head into work. 🙃 Oh well, maybe they won't need me to come in. It is my overtime shift.

Edited to add: Also found out that my niece's girlfriend is presumed positive for covid-19. She is a medical student in New York. Several of her classmates have tested positive. They will okay a test for her but she has to drive herself there and they don't have a car. They either walk or take public transportation. She isn't about to take public transportation to go get tested!!
There is a hospital within walking distance if she gets bad ( she actually worked there during med school). She graduates this year. They told her they expect it to be a mild case for her. :fl
Keeping my fingers crossed for a mild case! And darn that weather!

Do you have any bee keeping friends around that might be able to give or sell you a queen (once it warms up) or will it take too long for any hives to make queen cells?

OH ya. We're up to our eyeballs out here in keepers. It's not a problem. I'll let them make their own queen rather than risking a royal rejection and causing a hive coup.
