What did you do in the garden today?

Welcome back @Sueby. You have been missed. I was wondering how you were doing with your back and the Coronavirus on top of that. I’m on the last leg of building up my Wee Farm, then no more building after this last chicken coop project.

Building a new coop?? Nice! I saw a few pages back that you had chicks in a brooder?

We built a small coop, it'll house 4 chickens or so till I can integrate them, then in a year or 2 maybe some Silkies to raise chicks. Speaking of, I put the pullets in with the big girls for an hour or so today, 1 of the big girls is a meanie! Try again for a little bit tmrw I guess. I may have to separate the mean girl to get this to work though, we'll see.

I hate integrating new chickens. I’m adding a grow out pen so I can keep the new pullets separate until they are near laying age. After that I will use it for meat birds. I can’t believe the price of chicken in the grocery store.

I dunno I do not integrate chicken I leave them to decide their own pecking order while ranging this fenced in acre. Now, I do not enforce my sleeping arrangements on them, they all decide where they sleep. Thankfully I still have a few unutilized nooks and crannies yet and more salvaged/repurpseable lumber. Oh yeah, ask me again in 6-8 weeks as I ordered 6 straight run Blue Sumatra the other day from Cackle. I bet I'll be stuck building something in the heat.

Late edit same post- Oh I did have a conversation with my crazy neighbor who I contacted the deputies about earlier today. He made some low level threats to me because his poor chicken killing, fence undermining puppy can't get its chicken killing fix and is barking and unhappy. He yelled I hope you're happy, my response was pretty much yeah I'm happy I do not have to shoot or snare trap your animal as I am entitled to by law. I don't want that and I am sure you don't want that either. You could see the spittle flying from his face as I informed him we are both Texans and the law applies to me just the same as it does to you. Please refer to sec 822.011 of the attached pdf if you want more information it is an excerpt of the complete multi thousand page document.

We follow the "see-no-touch" method that has been described here on BYC and have no problems whatsoever. Our 11-week old BA are even now pretty much fully integrated with our older flock, except they (the young birds) have not yet figured out the rather intricate system of fencing and gates that would allow them to free range. In a couple of weeks they will, though, by following the older birds.
