What did you do in the garden today?

This has really been the year of the snakes! I knew the temporary run for the babies wasn't 100% secure, but letting them have some freedom was a risk worth taking. Found this in with them with my little blue laced red Wyandotte inside. Found out my snake grabber is dual purpose. Bludgeon to death and then extract! The fool in the coop waiting for the girls to come lay eggs gets a pass for now. I'm going to go back with wire and duct tape and make some more adjustments on the playpen. Got some more work done on the coop floor. This adds some urgency!

Anybody use 1 inch hardware cloth on coops and runs? Our local hardware store sells 50 foot rolls of 4 foot height for $43. I think 19 gauge. Seems like a steal if the holes are small enough! They may have some in stock tomorrow.View attachment 2244969

New sprouts from what I planted the other day in the hay bale garden.
So, do you know what is in its belly? 😬

Yes. One of the chicks. My daughter was so mad that she beat the wiggling tail with the shovel. She said that when Lil' Squirt (runt baby) died, she got to bury her. When I asked if she wanted to bury the snake to bury the chick she said " only if we can cut it out." I later sent her in with the dogs while I flung snake across the road. The puppy was very confused about where the dead snake went. Kept digging and nosing around the area LOL.

Thanks so much! I do feel a tremendous amount of guilt over the death's. I appreciate the coop pic too. I'm curious about wind with rain, any issues with the inside getting wet? We get horizontal rain during monsoons so that's why I used solid walls on the sides.
Yes, we get some good tropical storms a few times a year here, I have not had a problem (touch wood) yet. I have about 20" overhang on the Northern and Southern sides and I'll staple bags onto where needed and peal off when I don't need any more. As long as I am half paying attention to the weather i'm ok. even with the wrap around type storms we get here. I also fold and reuse my bags 😉 those feed bags are awesome tuff.

Note how sandy the soil is there. Very much a let down that i couldn't decapitate the offender.
I'd want to open it up and see if my chick was still alive. we don't have snakes here so that is probably a VERY nieve statement. .. but since snakes open their jaws (nat geo lol) i'd def be curious.
