What did you do in the garden today?

Pickle Worm in Cantaloupe, I am going to let it ripen and give it to chickens, they like the pests and the fruit, double fun for them. I was going to feed all but one to them anyways, looks like i won't even get one now

Saving the seeds on these

(Carolina Reaper) When it turns red I process a chicken and freeze the bone carcass with the pepper for a batch of Bone Broth in the future.

Morning all. Watering the garden now, picked a handful of green beans & a couple squash. I found a hornworm - because why wouldn't I? I have every other garden pest so of course I have hornworms! But boy were the chickens happy to eat that sucker! My gosh they are hard to spot! I have been seeing pellet like poop for 2 days now, figured it was a hornworm but couldn't find anything - then I spotted 1 today. I'm sure I have more than that but couldn't see anything else. How the heck do you guys see them?

Waiting very (im)patiently for my garden sprayer to arrive today. I just can't keep up with all the squash & cucumber bugs with just a small bottle sprayer & they're out of control.

My garlic is all dried & is beautiful. I used it in the pickles I canned yesterday. That & I finally got some dill that wasn't eaten by the swallowtails. I use all of it in the pickles too.

I'm going to rip out the rest of the cukes I think & start getting ready to plant some more lettuce in a couple weeks. Hoping with shade cloth I can get it to grow.

The rutabagas are doing ok, I should have watered more, only about half survived. I think I'll plant some more seed after the hurricane comes thru.

Have a great day all!

Apparently a black light flashlight makes them glow. Go to Menards/Lowes/HD/ etc - we bought ours at Menards. Go out when it is dark, or nearly so, and look for the glowing worms. Otherwise, spray with a Bt spray for killing caterpillars.

Ooh thank you!!

eta: I just ordered one on amazon. I now remember this discussion with the blacklight here - didn't pay too much attention because it wasn't an issue at the time. :he

I love my 365nm flashlight. It is very useful and yep good for hornworms. They don't light up as bright as scorpions though. I am very glad scorpions light up as bright as scorpions though.

I’m having my coffee and enjoying being a spectator for hummingbird WW3. Need to get to work though. Yesterday we replaced our front door. Waited longer than we should have, but wanted to make sure Belle wasn’t a scratcher. Remember my description of Toby? This is what he did if he heard guns or thunder,

I have one and forgot to go out late last night to look for the dumb thing. Thanks for the reminder. I have a strong black light flashlight (amazon $10) in the dark, that thing lights up that white line and the white dots on it's side like a beacon! I pluck them off and chuck them far over the fence, because my hens are too prissy to eat them. Sigh.....
