Last night when they were rudely thrust upon her she was fine. This morning she got up and had them out of the nest and eating but then went back to her nest and left the babies to fend for themselves. When I kicked her out of the nest she got b!#@% and started pecking the chicks. We made some hasty accommodations. Now the broody is standing outside the pop door acting like she wants themThose are gorgeous melons! I bet they smell awesome!
Sweet babies! Did the new mama take to them okay?
Grats! Does that mean our pullets are hens now? So exciting!
I've never seen elderberries before but we planted a bunch on our yard so I'm curious, do you normally harvest them by the stem?
I hear you, we had to have our house in Portland appraised before we could sell it and it was nerve wracking.
Oh let me know how they are and what you added!
The videos and pictures have been terrifying, I hope you're in a safe area. And your tomatoes will ripen fine. Lots of folks here pick them early to avoid rain or pest damage.
I know! Poor girl!
I'm with you, I hit mine with the steel nearly every time I use them but I have got to find a good professional to take them to. I used to get them done every 6 months or so but haven't since we moved, and now so much is up in the air.
omg that is terrible! I don't understand what is wrong with people. I am a very peaceful person but someone mistreating humans or any other animals can drive me into a fury. Animals are cruel to each other, they can't be blamed for that, they have no conscience, but humans have no such excuse. I am so sorry for you and the poor chickens, that must have been miserable.
So my excitement this morning. I was just getting dressed when Glyness started yelling. I went out when she sang the first time and found her egg in one of the nest boxes and within 30 minutes she was back hunkered in the same nest box. I left her there and wondered if she was going broody. I was watering when she started to sing again and I saw her walk out of the coop singing at the top of her lungs (who could blame her?) so I checked her nest box and the other egg was there. She's the boss hen, but not mean about it, and she's a funny smart girl. She's gotten treats today and seems perfectly fine now, I was a little concerned she might have injured herself with 2 eggs in the same morning and on her first laying. I was sure the smallest (both eggs were small) wouldn't have a yolk but when i cracked them for brunch, they both looked like normal if small eggs.View attachment 2298897
We had them with the crappie we caught yesterday, the tomatoes picked from the garden and some leftover fritters. Meal fit for royalty!
No rain last night (but that was unlikely anyway) but maybe tonight. I'll be picking the tomatoes close to ripe today just in case. It's already pretty windy so that's hopeful of a weather change. The pressure dropped and is still dropping so we do have a low coming in off the ocean. It's why we went fishing yesterday. The watering is done and the critters seen to. We got more of the shrubs and trees cleared of weeds and grass and mulched them with wood chips.
Really windy, maybe another good day to go fishing again.![]()

Good luck Penny I bought some yesterday. Let's both hope they arrive in a timely manner with no breakage and at least 75% hatchCross your fingers I bought eggs on Ebay today
I'd have the Humane Society on them in a heartbeat!!Aloha gang,
Oh boy. Trouble in paradise
So I hear a young possible pullet or cockerel give that pleading cry, we probably all know that sound of chicken helplessness by now. I looked out my bathroom window into my neighbor's yard where the sound was coming from and I see a kid swinging a chicken of some sort in front of a dog. These are the kids I kinda took under my wing and gave Jazz and a bunch of chicks to, as long as they built a coop and took care of.... So i hopped the fence into my son's yard and walked to the back to let these kids know that I saw them and to stop but they had already stopped the behavior and were looking a little like they think I didn't know. I check on Jazz and she and 1 chick are in the same cage that I rescued her from awhile back, about 16"X 24"
So, I shoot the mom a text message to give me back Jazz, I was pretty nice about it too. I consider the deal broken. I will consider the rest of the chicks, as heartbreaking as it is a loss. She accuses me of stalking lol.
One of their young cockerels in now in my yard trying to get a meal. He looks sick and I don't like him around my chickens but it may just be malnutrition and it is not his fault. The kids also had a trap in my sons yard to trap chickens. She and I have been having words. I'm pretty calm but she is kind of off her rocker. So much for good deeds. I really hate the human race sometimes...![]()
I would be in jail by now cuz that mom would have a bloody nose and those kids would have their butts whipped. You are far more kind than I.Aloha gang,
