What did you do in the garden today?

Aloha gang,
Oh boy. Trouble in paradise
So I hear a young possible pullet or cockerel give that pleading cry, we probably all know that sound of chicken helplessness by now. I looked out my bathroom window into my neighbor's yard where the sound was coming from and I see a kid swinging a chicken of some sort in front of a dog. These are the kids I kinda took under my wing and gave Jazz and a bunch of chicks to, as long as they built a coop and took care of...:mad:. So i hopped the fence into my son's yard and walked to the back to let these kids know that I saw them and to stop but they had already stopped the behavior and were looking a little like they think I didn't know. I check on Jazz and she and 1 chick are in the same cage that I rescued her from awhile back, about 16"X 24":mad::mad: So, I shoot the mom a text message to give me back Jazz, I was pretty nice about it too. I consider the deal broken. I will consider the rest of the chicks, as heartbreaking as it is a loss. She accuses me of stalking lol.
One of their young cockerels in now in my yard trying to get a meal. He looks sick and I don't like him around my chickens but it may just be malnutrition and it is not his fault. The kids also had a trap in my sons yard to trap chickens. She and I have been having words. I'm pretty calm but she is kind of off her rocker. So much for good deeds. I really hate the human race sometimes...:smack

that’s terrible!!! I’m glad you are standing your ground. Hopefully she’s not defending her kids behavior like swinging a helpless chicken in front of a dog is ok.

m glad you asked for Jazz back!

She said she would mention to the kids (let them make the decision) but instead of feeling shame she is turning it all onto me. I am so tired of trash people with no dignity or respect for themselves or others. I just feel really bad for Jazz. She saw me and was trying to get out of the cage. I'm pretty sick about it. They moved into the neighborhood a few months back and I have been nothing but kind. Their mom is apparently stressed and I feel for her but hey... she needs to get a grip.

Good knives are awesome. And when you cut yourself on a good knife - it is such a clean cut (hopefully not deep) that it heals really fast too. I'm sure you can figure out how I know this....I'll give you one guess.
Nothing like dermabond and soaking iodine for the emergency kitchen supplies with the good knives. Even though we keep that handy we have some knives that DW will not touch. My good ones were bought in 2007 and we probably need an updated set by now.

Found a dermabond video on youtube. It is gross if you are squeemish about medical incisions. The video is short and appropriate and can save you an ER visit provided you know how to soak the wound to sterilize it prior to sealing it in and ensure there is no possibility of foreign bodies in the wound bed. The stuff forms a nice watertight seal and will get you back and cooking in under 30 minutes and seals for 2 or so weeks. For finger tips though I would paint the wound a few more times than they show. Why waste the rest of that 20 dollars when you can be handwashing more?

Also as a testimonial since I have "procured that" DW stopped slicing the bejezus out of herself in the kitchen.

Forgot to post that yesterday I went to my friend’s winery and helped harvest the Niagara grapes. They always let me bring some “bad ones” home for the chickens as well as some to make jam or jelly with!

This melon was looking pretty nice in the garden. In the late afternoon it separated from the vine partially, so I picked it.
Those are gorgeous melons! I bet they smell awesome!
I'm headed out to water in a minute but wanted to share a pic of the babies. I put them under the broody last night. Happy Thursday!
Sweet babies! Did the new mama take to them okay?
One of my little BO's laid their first egg yesterday. Surprise, surprise.
Grats! Does that mean our pullets are hens now? So exciting!
yesterday we harvested lots more peaches, tomatoes, and elder Berrys.
I've never seen elderberries before but we planted a bunch on our yard so I'm curious, do you normally harvest them by the stem?
The appraisal is all done. Now I can breathe a little easier.
I hear you, we had to have our house in Portland appraised before we could sell it and it was nerve wracking.
I have 6 trays of yellow squash in the dehydrator, I added a little spice to the recipe @NewBoots posted. Can't wait to try them.
Oh let me know how they are and what you added!
We're having a heat wave here along the Ca coast. Now, of course the fires are all starting up.
The videos and pictures have been terrifying, I hope you're in a safe area. And your tomatoes will ripen fine. Lots of folks here pick them early to avoid rain or pest damage.
I've never heard of that! She is very young too! She must have been a bit "backed up". :lau
I know! Poor girl!
I just spent an obscene amount of money on a set of Wusthof knives. I'm so sick of cutting myself because my current knives suck.
I'm with you, I hit mine with the steel nearly every time I use them but I have got to find a good professional to take them to. I used to get them done every 6 months or so but haven't since we moved, and now so much is up in the air.

omg that is terrible! I don't understand what is wrong with people. I am a very peaceful person but someone mistreating humans or any other animals can drive me into a fury. Animals are cruel to each other, they can't be blamed for that, they have no conscience, but humans have no such excuse. I am so sorry for you and the poor chickens, that must have been miserable. :hugs

So my excitement this morning. I was just getting dressed when Glyness started yelling. I went out when she sang the first time and found her egg in one of the nest boxes and within 30 minutes she was back hunkered in the same nest box. I left her there and wondered if she was going broody. I was watering when she started to sing again and I saw her walk out of the coop singing at the top of her lungs (who could blame her?) so I checked her nest box and the other egg was there. She's the boss hen, but not mean about it, and she's a funny smart girl. She's gotten treats today and seems perfectly fine now, I was a little concerned she might have injured herself with 2 eggs in the same morning and on her first laying. I was sure the smallest (both eggs were small) wouldn't have a yolk but when i cracked them for brunch, they both looked like normal if small eggs.

We had them with the crappie we caught yesterday, the tomatoes picked from the garden and some leftover fritters. Meal fit for royalty!

No rain last night (but that was unlikely anyway) but maybe tonight. I'll be picking the tomatoes close to ripe today just in case. It's already pretty windy so that's hopeful of a weather change. The pressure dropped and is still dropping so we do have a low coming in off the ocean. It's why we went fishing yesterday. The watering is done and the critters seen to. We got more of the shrubs and trees cleared of weeds and grass and mulched them with wood chips.

Really windy, maybe another good day to go fishing again. :)
