What did you do in the garden today?

Busy day, mostly driving errands a couple hundred miles, at least!

Costco run, and this location had nearly everything I needed. It is 70+ miles away, so at least I got most on my list.

picked up a tree for a single scenic spot towards the back yard. It is a black Tupelo tree, and we will plant it tomorrow.

then picked up 20 meat chicks That I ordered a couple months ago.

picked what may be the last 2 muskmelons. The others look like the vines are dying back. The watermelon vines look ok so far.

Another heavy labor day for 12 hours. Mercy. Project after project after project.
Taking advantage of the dry air mass, low humidity, light wind and 80 degree days, while they're here.
Late this afternoon I dislocated my thumb again. MAN that slowed me down. It hurt so bad I thought I was going to be sick. Popping it back was worse. Stupid thumb. Putting the laundry in the dryer of all things. I threw things in rather hard, and misjudged the door opening. My thumb didn't make it through the hole. LOL. OH well.
Another list of projects to get through tomorrow, but not nearly as many.

How is everyone's luffa coming along??? Mine never had two flowers going at once, so nothing was fertilized.

Mortgage Lifter is a variety of heirloom tomato. They are a light pink and to me the very best tasting tomatoes.
Thank you...after I asked, I thought that maybe it was a sandwich...lol! My husband is probably familiar with them. Might be one we'll have to try. We grow Brandywine's every year, they are a pretty good tomato!

y prolific Brad's Atomic purple

we grew this one. What a weird tomato! It grew fairly big tomatoes ( it’s is a cherry type...elongated). But they didn’t turn color for a very long time, but their color, when turned, was an unappetizing striped combination colors. We didn’t care for the flavor much, but not sure if we ate ripe ones or not...

Paul Newman's

we like this salsa brand too!

How is everyone's luffa coming along

We have at least one growing well. I think there might be another one in amongst the leaves, but couldn’t find it today. currently about 8-10” long, and maybe 1” thick, solid green, so it is still growing. ours puts out a cluster of yellow male flowers, but within The cluster only 1 or 2 bloom each day. Then a female flower blooms only occasionally.

Ooh, this thread moves fast! I will have to check it every day so that I can keep up.

I am excited that some of you are growing luffas. My grandmother used to grow them, and I would like to try. I can't remember the best way to bleach them though.

It was mainly a weeding day after work today. The other main chore, given that it is spring here, is moving seedlings outside in the morning and in in the evening. Mainly tomatoes and capsicums. We had a frost today, hopefully the last for the year, so pampering the seedlings is still justified.

Morning all.

Walked through the garden & cleaned up a lot of squash leaves & topped the tomatoes again. My lettuce got too much (can't believe I'm saying it) rain just as they were coming up - not much is making it. But I planted some more in a giant pot on the deck, hopefully that will come up as I'm out of seed. The beans are mad exploding right now, processed a gallon ziplock full for the freezer yesterday. Need to fertilize today. Also had to treat for powdery mildew - man mouthwash works really well for it!

I ordered my seeds for next year, don't want to miss out. Now I'll just need to pick up some onion sets & tomato starts in the spring. Spent some time deciding what I'll grow again & what I won't & where I'll put it rotating everything. Especially with the stupid squash bugs I had this year, rotation will be a good thing. Hopefully the vining squash seeds I ordered are actually vines, unlike the mess I had this year!

Have a great day all!

Good morning gardeners. Nothing going on in the garden. I picked some blushing tomatoes and some more pole beans. I have at least a pound of the beans so I need to process them and get them into the freezer. Yesterday I had a lot of interruptions after my trip to the grocery store. It took me all day to peel enough tomatoes to make one batch of salsa. I finally finished up during my dinnertime so dinner was a grilled cheese on sourdough bread sandwich. I'm not sure if I will be making another batch of regular salsa, however I could take all the green tomatoes and make green tomato salsa verde. Finding truly fresh tomatillos is near impossible around here so green tomatoes are a good substitute. I need to get back to processing the peaches. I want to do one more batch of preserves then freeze slices from the remaining fruit. I did take a few minutes to thin the chard, endive and radishes this morning. Pretty quick with a pair of scissors in hand. I was curious about the hot pepper sauce you made @Acre4Me. Since you didn't water bath can them, are they shelf stable or do you need to refrigerate? I have jalapenos and like to keep hot sauce around for cooking but even with the refrigerator in the basement I don't have a lot of extra room for regular refrigeration. Just curious if it would work for me. A quick note on the okra plants: one is starting to look a little peaked but the other is still alive and well and branching out and even blooming. I will definitely be planting them again. Have a great day everyone and happy harvesting.
