What did you do in the garden today?

I walked by the blooming tulips, hyacinths, etc in front of the grocery store yesterday. They smelled heavenly, and the bees agreed! I'm hilariously terrified of bees, but determined to keep them eventually.

I want to have a garden full of early bulbs one day. Things to look forward to!

The spinach is either beginning to sprout... or... eh........ not looking so good. I hope that it's sprouting not molding.

My smallest is trying to earn "monies" for his new piggy bank, so yesterday I helped him gather up rocks in the yard as a "big job for monies." We filled his tiny wagon twice, and it's making for a cute flower bed border.
So cute when the little ones help with chores.

That reminded me of when my sister and I were about 4 and 5, our grandmother gave us the job of weeding her garden. She said she'd pay us 5 cents/pound and handed each of us a big paper grocery bag. We were convinced we were going to make major bank! After all, a full grocery bag is pretty heavy, right? We spent about an hour and filled our bags with weeds, then she weighed them on the bathroom scale and handed us 10 cents each - so disappointing!
At least back then (the 60's) we could afford a candy bar each.

Yup, oh, the 60s. Candy bars were a dime, and BIG tootsie rolls were a nickel. If you had a quarter, man, you could get so much candy that mom took some of it away so that "you wouldn't spoil your appetite."

Gonna see about turning the compost today. Hopefully, the muscle I pulled in my back will get pulled back into place.

Nah, it doesn't happen like that. Just wishing.

Morning all. Painted the wainscoting yesterday, however it will need another coat. I cleaned my bedroom windows and dusted the ceiling fan. I'm headed to the grocery store in a few minutes to beat the weekend rush. Most of the snow and ice melted overnight so aside from the mud, pruning the fruit trees should be quick and easy today. Temps are still in the mid 50's for now but there's green grass in the backyard for the chickens and some bulbs starting to emerge so it definitely looks more like Spring. Best of luck to those of you in the mid west on track to be socked in by the big snow storm this weekend.

The sun is back! Cold at night though.

we removed the deep chipped wood mulch (from a tree company) in the pen we built last year. We then put in a whole lotta dirt and tamped it down, to make the floor firm. Then put in several bags of shavings. We did this for two reasons: 1. The meat chickens we raised would topple over and die (couldn’t breathe) possible bc the floor was too soft and “bouncy” and once the meat birds get hefty, they aren’t the most agile of creatures. 2. The male chickens we raised to butcher in the other half of the pen until Dec started to die, but we couldn’t figure out why. The main flock (separate, but nearby) is fine. Maybe there was something in the wood chips that caused some problems-we don’t know! But, now those wood chippings are removed and the pen is ready for chicks and turkey poults. Ultimately the turkey poults will only reside in there.

Ordered 3 grow lights. Should arrive tomorrow so the seedlings will be happy.

That is scary @Acre4Me - not know why they died. I have a huge pile of chips & want to move it into the run at some point, but I'm scared of asperiligus (sp?) mold.

I repaired the garden fence where the plow guy took down a pole. Just need DH to pound in the new Tpost.

I have another new layer today. Pullet eggs crack me up.

I Love pullet eggs. You know the big girls look at those and just roll their eyes.
ONION sets. I forgot to get them yesterday. Must remember to get today.

Trip to town twice in two days. Bleh.
Brakes went on the truck. Piece of the shoe on front side went, LOUDLY. But it was time to do them all anyway.

$2100 gone poof. But necessary.
