What did you do in the garden today?

Thanks....I really didn't know that but DUH! It makes perfect sense....I have eaten small Luffas ....and talk about something inedible when mature!!!!

In your area Tatume or Mexican zucchini is common . I have grown it and to me it is like a gourd . Planted some this year after a long time . Tatume is said to have boer resistance .

I picked some zucchini and some squash bugs. DH came home with a giant zucchini from the neighbors. "Why did you take some zucchini when we TONS of it? You should be giving it away!" (LOL) Stuck it in the freezer for a little bit then cut it in half for the chickens. They were happy with it! I prefer to pick mine tiny, since I have 5 plants for the 2 of us!

(Thought some would die)

Not sure I have enough corn to get good pollinization, even though I planted it in a block. Tried to assist, found out I am probably allergic to corn pollen, or just the tiny particles made me sneeze for half an hour. Not fun.

Definitely need to grow some chayote next year so I can make some calabacitas.

Very surprised my carrots are looking pretty good.

Ok...between the mention of chayote....and making it with zucchini....I think I know what calavacticas is...but I've never heard of it....( although I've been making it for over 40 years....if it's what I think).....enlighten me please....

So much for the idea that the heat will kill weed seeds .

Living in the deep south I can testify that the heat will not kill weeds and if it refuses to rain the weeds will last longer than the veggies.

But is is good to remember that if a garden will not grow weeds it will not grow anything.

It is also natural that plants will wilt in the afternoon even with good water. If they wilt in the morning they need water.

Quote: Tatume is interesting. Planted it last year and this year. A slightly different taste than other squashes like summer or zucchini. Used like summer and succhini early in the season. Pretty too.

Quote: lol weeds seem to ba far more durable than anything I plant. lol I have started looking at the "weeds" with interest, as in what is it and what can I use it for. IDing is the tough part.

All my plants died but the tomatoes and peppers. But I was able to harvest 15 lb. of pumpkin, 10 lb. of squash (yummy!) and nothing else. The rhubarb died a couple of times and STILL comes back! (My first experience with rhubarb)
So I live in growing zone 9b and is it okay to grow buckwheat this winter? At night it gets to high 30's (but I do cover all of my plants) and 60 in daytime. (Thanks in advance to anyone who replies as I have no idea of buck wheats growing info!)

Your area is much better suited to fall gardening....with summer crops....We don't actually have long growing seasons....you more than I...but still....we have two very short ones...with a heat tempest in the middle when everything but okra and cactus dies....

It's hard to imagine starting transplants when it's over 100° outside....but plants will handle being hot while young better than old....and in your area...just a little frost protection and you could still be harvesting tomatoes in November or December....

And most of the cool weather crops should go all the way through the winter....

You guys are so inspiring with all your veggies. I started a no-dig bed this year because I've just moved to a new place. It worked well to start out, but I don't think I put enough compost on top as I've had rather lacklustre growing. The tomatoes and egg plant in the greenhouse are doing excellently though!

We've had a great day for gardening today - rain in the morning and now it's come out sunny. Finally planted out the zinnias and cosmos, and had a good weed around to gather some salad for my feathered girls.....and a few slugs too ;)

I was referring to heat in the compost pile killing seed . Then again the pile never heats evenly . Just the center .
