What did you do in the garden today?

Good morning gardeners. Glad to hear you are on the mend @Sueby. Slow peppers? Are there any fast ones. LOL! My bell peppers are unfurling and the jalapenos are showing signs of germination. The poblanos are showing no signs of life yet, however that's how they were last year. Yesterdays temps were nice and warm in the low 70s. Today is the start of our cold spell with more seasonal temps of highs in the mid 50s and overnight lows in high 30s. Still not warm enough for the warmer season veggies. My arugula and radishes are coming up. There's something stirring on the line of lettuce I planted. I planted the curly endive in with the rest of the salad greens in my little covered bed then covered it all up to warm it up under there. I did some thinning on the arugula and radishes, but I'm sure it will need more. Today's goal is to get the potatoes planted. The parsley is doing well however, I'm not clearing the leaf mulch off the herb beds until the temperatures stay warm. I also saw signs of life in the row of curly kale I planted. That's exciting. I've only grown the little bunching onions @Fishychix. They were pretty easy and I will look for places to tuck some in this year. But I go through a lot of regular onions and my gardening space is limited. I don't trim my fig @BReeder! and I keep mine in an unheated garage in the winter. The fig trees need a period of dormancy. However, @Sueby's fig tree does much better than mine but I suspect it is because she is in a different growing zone just a bit further south of me.

Here are some shots of my morning walk today.

Decided yesterday that I'm going to rip the possibly dead mums out of their pots on the back porch. I'll plant strawberries in them instead. But nowhere is selling strawberries yet. I'll have to wait a little bit. However I did pick up one sweet basil plant, the best one I could find, which isn't saying much. Sheesh. I'm going to grow it out a bit and give it to the neighbor.

My basil sprout that I was trying to grow finally keeled over dead. I'll plant the new one in that pot. However the strawberry runner is holding on still. I'm hoping it pulls through and greens up soon. Seems almost dormant still, but I think it might be sending up some new green leaves.

We've got a string of chilly weather passing through for a week or so. After that I'll start putting things out during the day to get some real sun and heat on them.

Oops, I did it again! 🤣🤣. I went to the nursery to get my potatoes and bought several flowers, some rosemary(finally!) and onion sets. I have never grown onions. Tips are appreciated 😉
You sound like me, go to get one thing and come home with much more than planned! :highfive:

Good morning gardeners. Hubs was my hero yesterday! He trimmed the bougainvillea and cut the grass :love I’ve got the sprinkler going now and am thankful we don’t have wind today. When that’s done I’ll go out and fertilize a few things and probably start deadheading the lavender. I need to do the same to the TX sage. I cleaned out the fridge and have a bucketful of coffee grounds and old veggies/fruit to go out to the compost bins. I use the bins for stuff like that to keep the roof rats away and put the yard clippings and trimmings in the big pile. Anyway, done with breakfast, time to get back to work. Have a great day all!

Good Morning all.
Dh jokes I do more in a day than most people get done in a week.
Looking around my neighborhood, I think he's right.

Just now noon and I've been at it since 8. Cord for the greenhouse is too short, but the access port is drilled and inset is installed. The rubber floor mat is installed. I moved the Horse radish down there. I painted the vent blocks and installed them this morning, and replaced the cord with paracording on cleats. Now when the wind blows (when does it NOT?) The vents don't rattle. I still need to cut out large holes for the side vents and caps. Even with the door open, and the vents in the roof wide open, and the breeze blowing right in, the thermometer says 100. It doesn't FEEL like 100, maybe 80, so more vents it is.I'll do one low and one about chest high.

We caught and juiced up the last alpaca this morning. Not sure it did any good. He refused to budge and get into the chute. So I hooked his lead to the stall wall and DH held once side, and I wedged myself behind and under to keep him from cushing and cut his nails. I swear. If he would JUST behave, I'd be done in under 90 seconds.

Lunch and then moving the pulled weeds from the garden to the compost and the mulch bags to their approximate location in the garden for gutting at my leisure this week. DH did the manure. The law needs mowed, but I can do that alone tomorrow.

We're trying to figure out where to put our wood fired oven. Ugh. Silly how hard that decision is.

Have a great day all :)

Do you prune your dig all the back to the trunk for winter? Just starting with a fig here. Mine is in a large pot that I'll put outside for the summer. It's still in the sunroom for now.
I do not. I had an accident with it a couple years ago, you can see the top broke off. But it's a perfect height! I do trim the crap out of it when it's growing how I don't want it to - it handles it all well. I leave it outside for a couple frosts till all the leave fall off, then it goes in an unheated room in the house in the dark.
On my peppers, I keep the house at 70-72. I'm wondering if the jalepenos and habaneros need it a but warmer... maybe I should pull out the heat mat again. Not sure though...
Mine are even on a heat mat & I've still only gotten 4 out of 20 in over a month - they pop up like one a week. LOL. This is habaneros on the left & then cherry peppers next to them, they were all planted at the same time.

So I got a nice present today - I forgot I ordered some lemon thyme when I placed a big online order at Walmart. Good thing too because my thyme didn't make it through the winter. Decent little plants that came Fedex, they are Bonnie plants. (& the rosemary I bought last week)

Nothing like a sick chicken to get a girl to put a shoe on! I thought she was dead out in the run & DH is out at the range so it was on me. She's now in a crate not looking so good. It's my oldest RSL who never started laying again after her molt in the fall. She looks to me to be struggling to lay, having some contractions. I stuffed a calcium citrate in her, I hope it help. I feel bad for her.
