What did you do in the garden today?

I hear you on the weeding. In the Fall I'm going to get a load of wood chips and try to start the "Back to Eden" style of gardening. Who knows whether it will work here or not, but I think it's worth a try.

HI Friday Yet, I've had good luck mulching with straw for keeping the weeds out and the moisture in. Then, in the fall, I just till it in with some of my magic compost, cover with fresh straw and wait till spring.

Today I took down all the faded hollyhocks. It was two full garbage cans worth. An itchy shower of seeds and many, many praying mantises to relocate. Hollyhocks are SO pretty, but what a mess they are when they're done.

Got up the courage to check the garden the horses trashed 2 weeks ago-- i'm thrilled they missed the tomatos and the beans.

Even found scarlet runners that reseeded themselves from last year as they are in on a totally different fenceline!!

It was 106 degrees yesterday and is supposed to be hotter today. So I got up at 5 am and did some weeding and clean up in the veggie garden. Picked the last of the mid summer blueberries and lots of gooseberries too. We have a good batch of late cain berries coming in, I thinned out the branches that fruited earl then the yard-waste container was full so I pot it on the curb and came in and started a batch of cold brewed coffee.

Now I am going to fill up the chickens little wading pool and pot the eggplants in containers back into the green house. I took them out a week ago because they had awhite fly infestation. That's resolved but the direct sun is just to much for them.

I have never grown in containers before. The egg plants, all in 2 gallon pots, are all between 2 1/2 and 3 feet tall and have fruit and lots of blossoms. The ones in the beds never get more than 2 feet tall and I am lucky if I get more than 3-4 eggplants per plant..

I'm going to spend the hot part of the day floating in the pool drinking iced coffee. and thenpick beans and water in the evening. and hope you all have a wonderful day!

Weeds are worse than usual this summer, I thinkthe mild winter and now an extremely hot dry summer is the reason.. I mulch with manure free compost and chopped hay that we get for free from a local mushroom farm that I lay out thick over cardboard (worms love cardboard!). I do pull shallow weeds but I leave the deep rooted ones and just cut off the tops to keep them from going to seed. I do this because they are actually beneficial to the soil by improving drainage and promoting beneficial microbes. And chickens love the leaves.

Anyone ever try beneficial nematodes in their garden? They are supposed to be good for killing fleas & other pests. Just curious if anyone had any success. I also read that milky spore is great for pests, esp June Beetles.

I grow and encourage all sorts to bacteria bygrowing out my worm my worm poop. I feed it molasses. I cup of castings makes 5 gallons of tea with millions of bacteria.
