That’s awful TJ, I’m so sorry!Yesterday I decided to take the heat lamp and MHP out of the Silkie House. The Silkies are around 8 weeks old now and the Easter chicks are 4 weeks old. It's generally staying in the 50s or higher at night.
Later yesterday evening I noticed ALL the Silkies were outside at dusk. I chased them up on their porch but they didn't want to go inside. I thought it was because they weren't used to it being dark in there so I reached in and switched on a light. Came back later to shut the lights off and noticed ALL the Silkies and chicks were huddled on the opposite side of the coop than normal. Well that's odd.... But I had a zillion things to do so I shut off the light and moved on.
You know where this is going, right? This morning they were all out in the run when I went to check their feeder. I watched them for a few minutes and realized one of the CCLB chicks was missing. I went into the coop to look for her and found a GIANT black snake hiding in there behind the nesting boxes. It had killed and eaten the missing chick.
DH dragged it out of the coop and I killed it with a shovel. It had to have entered in the daytime because there's no way it could get in that coop at night.
My poor babies.....They are traumatized.
Ordered 6. This is very exciting! I love this BYC site, You all are so dang helpful and inspiring. Ive loved it for chickens for a long time but now I'm finding great garden topics as well. I never get tired of hearing about others chicken and gardening adventures and ideas. Now we just need to add in goats and I'd have all my farming fun in one place! Thanks Again! Thanks for the tip I’ve never heard of them , they do have a lot of great things. I do mostly California natives but once in a while I add an ornamental bulb for interest. Thier site says my zone is ok so I’m going to give it try!
dang thats a big snake and you can see where the chick isThank you for all the condolences... I hate losing my birds to predators but it's even more offensive when they stick around and set up shop inside your coop.... Of course now I'm paranoid and worried about more showing up.
As silly as it is, I'm also really annoyed that he took a female chick instead of one of the unwanted males.... That would have still upset me but stung a little less.
This is the offender minus his head. Easily 5 ft long..... Ignore my goofy husband who dresses funny.
