What did you do in the garden today?

Got my Gurney's order. I ordered Red Baron onions, specifically, because they did so well last year. Gurney was the only place I found them.

I got a bag of "red onions." Maybe they're Red Baron, maybe not. Another reason why I won't ever, ever order from them again.

I weeded the strawberry beds today. I pinched off a lot of frosted flower buds. :(

Really hoping for some rain... Very dry right now.

Raining all around. We hit 90 again and it was humid. My son is home!
And I am happy to announce he has a job!
I'm so proud of him. Dean's list for 3 years, with honors, and 8 certifications, and his commercial drone pilot's licence from the FAA> OMG I could bust!

He's going to live here and save money. Apartment prices are through the roof. Casa mom and dad, provides and he works for it around the ranch, and I'm glad for the company. :)

Garden onions watered.

Greenhouse watered and fed, roof vent panels repaired.

Thundering now. Rain is fine, please no hail.

OH you should have seen the garden center at the home store. WALL to WALL people and buying tomatoes and such. FAR too early to plant. UGH.

Thank you for all the condolences... I hate losing my birds to predators but it's even more offensive when they stick around and set up shop inside your coop.... Of course now I'm paranoid and worried about more showing up.

As silly as it is, I'm also really annoyed that he took a female chick instead of one of the unwanted males.... That would have still upset me but stung a little less.

This is the offender minus his head. Easily 5 ft long..... Ignore my goofy husband who dresses funny. 😂

Yesterday I decided to take the heat lamp and MHP out of the Silkie House. The Silkies are around 8 weeks old now and the Easter chicks are 4 weeks old. It's generally staying in the 50s or higher at night.

Later yesterday evening I noticed ALL the Silkies were outside at dusk. I chased them up on their porch but they didn't want to go inside. I thought it was because they weren't used to it being dark in there so I reached in and switched on a light. Came back later to shut the lights off and noticed ALL the Silkies and chicks were huddled on the opposite side of the coop than normal. Well that's odd.... But I had a zillion things to do so I shut off the light and moved on.

You know where this is going, right? This morning they were all out in the run when I went to check their feeder. I watched them for a few minutes and realized one of the CCLB chicks was missing. I went into the coop to look for her and found a GIANT black snake hiding in there behind the nesting boxes. It had killed and eaten the missing chick. 😭😞

DH dragged it out of the coop and I killed it with a shovel. It had to have entered in the daytime because there's no way it could get in that coop at night.

My poor babies..... 😔 They are traumatized.
That’s awful TJ, I’m so sorry!

Ordered 6
Thanks for the tip I’ve never heard of them , they do have a lot of great things. I do mostly California natives but once in a while I add an ornamental bulb for interest. Thier site says my zone is ok so I’m going to give it try!
Ordered 6. This is very exciting! I love this BYC site, You all are so dang helpful and inspiring. Ive loved it for chickens for a long time but now I'm finding great garden topics as well. I never get tired of hearing about others chicken and gardening adventures and ideas. Now we just need to add in goats and I'd have all my farming fun in one place! Thanks Again!

dang thats a big snake and you can see where the chick is:mad:. So sad and I am sorry!
CCLB are my fav. If I was gonna add anything it would be more of those. I have two, one has never laid but she is so sweet I don't really care. I do love the blue color of their eggs tho and after having to deal with an accidental roo, I won't bring in anything that isnt sex linked or auto sexed again. As for your husbands way of dressing, I don't think its weird at al; and kudos to him for killin that snake. I make fun of mine cuz he'll wear his jammy bottoms out to week wack. Now I find that weird., but he gets the job done and thats all that matters to me. Wish I had a picture for you!

@TJAnonymous, I'm so sorry, and I bet you felt terrible. That is a huge snake, and speaking as a person who normally likes snakes, that one would have rocked me back on my heels. Only ones I find here are tiny baby garter snakes that we have to protect from the cats.

Got the mowing done and about half the watering then I ran out of steam. The squash I put in big pots on the bluff look good, the fence caps and slug bait are keeping all unauthorized personnel out. Good thing too, the striped green squash plants are exploding out of their pots in the greenhouse. I'll pick up more pots and soil tomorrow on market day. My girls are being good, today when I was ready to come inside they had all gone back to their run by themselves, but even when they don't anticipate me, a can of cat food brings them streaking across the yard.
