What did you do in the garden today?

Raining all around. We hit 90 again and it was humid. My son is home!
And I am happy to announce he has a job!
I'm so proud of him. Dean's list for 3 years, with honors, and 8 certifications, and his commercial drone pilot's licence from the FAA> OMG I could bust!

He's going to live here and save money. Apartment prices are through the roof. Casa mom and dad, provides and he works for it around the ranch, and I'm glad for the company. :)

Garden onions watered.

Greenhouse watered and fed, roof vent panels repaired.

Thundering now. Rain is fine, please no hail.

OH you should have seen the garden center at the home store. WALL to WALL people and buying tomatoes and such. FAR toorly to plant. UGH.
So glad he found a job. He's probably a hard worker coming from a ranch so he'll go far. Those kind of kids stand out anymore! No doubt he'll come in handy at home for you two.

I make fun of mine cuz he'll wear his jammy bottoms out to week wack. Now I find that weird., but he gets the job done and thats all that matters to me.
Haha, mine does the same! He'll also put on normal clothes when we're getting ready to go somewhere, and tell me he's ready, then I have to point out he's still wearing his slippers.

I did get this year's raised beds built and placed them where they're supposed to go in the garden, but I still have three more to level and fill - I'd better get a move on, I have tomato and eggplant seedlings ready to be repotted, cukes ready for the greenhouse, and yay! My loofas finally sprouted! Their beds are ready, it's two beds on either side of a trellis I hope they'll vine up over it.

I have lettuce and spinach in the one raised bed that was ready first, should be sprouting soon, I hope. In the tire beds I'm waiting for yellow squash and zucchini to come up, and I'm setting aside the others to plant the tomatoes.

My garden looks like nothing at the moment - bare dirt with various bare beds sitting around - but I keep telling myself I'm much better organized than last year.

The field, on the other hand, looks wonderful, thanks to Mr. Dog getting a new battery for the rider and mowing the whole thing (in his PJs, of course.) All the native shrubs and trees are growing beautifully, and some of last years' are getting big! Out of the ones I bought from Gurney's this year (two plums, four persimmon, one redbud) only one plum and one persimmon have shown a bit of growth. I'll keep trying to be patient.

my old seeds were sitting in a plastic container without water for about 3 days. I wanted to empty the compost barrel before throwing them in. the air is hot and a few corn seeds started to sprout! I planted green oaxacan corn and I am preparing another place behind the coop to plant purple corn. not sure about variety, might be morado. my plot is small so I hope that chicken coop will be a barrier between these 2 varieties.

But he's home-schooled and has always been a hard worker.
I had a coworker like that. I once told him, "Simon, if I would have been very proud to have had a son who turned out like you."

Bless his heart, he answered, "Sally, that means a lot to me."

Kids like yours and Simon give me hope for the next generation.

Morning all! Busy weekend here so I had a lot to catch up on.

Thank you for all the condolences... I hate losing my birds to predators but it's even more offensive when they stick around and set up shop inside your coop.... Of course now I'm paranoid and worried about more showing up.

As silly as it is, I'm also really annoyed that he took a female chick instead of one of the unwanted males.... That would have still upset me but stung a little less.

This is the offender minus his head. Easily 5 ft long..... Ignore my goofy husband who dresses funny. 😂

Sorry about the chick, that's just awful. :( That snake is huge & I would have pooped my pants. DH isn't goofy - he's adorable! & a hero killing that thing. Thankfully, like @NewBoots, we generally only see the baby garter snakes around here. We have one of the largest populations in the country of Timber rattlesnakes here (they're endangered too) but they are very shy & we've never seen one. I'm always careful walking out in the woods though.

So I got the starter mixed into the compost, hoping it heats up. I got the pole bean trellises up & got some beans planted. A critter followed me around & dug them all up. Same with the dahlia tubers I planted - all dug up. He didn't eat the tubers so I stuck them back in the ground. I'll have to replant beans today.

Got the strawberries mulched & watered in, they're starting to get some leaves. Got some cuke seeds in. More dill & parsley. Lettuce I started in a tunnel is looking good & ready to eat.

I got a couple garden decorations pulled out of storage & painted - they were looking crappy, now they're revitalized. Found some more slate buried when I was digging for dahlias so I added a couple more steps to the garden path. I don't have any idea why I keep finding all these big pieces of slate buried a few inches deep, but I love slate! I've found probably 20 big pieces, it's weird.

Good morning gardeners. I managed to get a few things planted yesterday. About half the tomatoes, more cucumbers, lettuce and bush string beans. The winds are finally letting up a bit but looking at the long term forecast it is going to be a soggy week. The rain moves in this evening then continues through Wednesday. Not complaining, but had to rearrange my daily schedule. I'll be mowing the back yard and trimming things up while things are relatively dry. Tomorrow will be my regular Monday chores of laundry and bread making. I'm not all that terrified of snakes. Growing up on the East coast fishing and camping trips were always an opportunity to encounter water moccasins and copperheads. Only saw a few garter snakes. When I lived in the South there were water moccasins everywhere as well as King and Corn snakes. I've only seen one tiny garter snake here. I wasn't sure if it was a garter snake at first. The chickens had it cornered and were trying to make it a light snack. When the little guy coiled and started striking at them I intervened. Snakes don't usually bother people or pets unless you surprise them AND they eat mice. That said, I did have the experience of reaching into the nest box for eggs (this was in the South) and a water moccasin popped his head out of the straw. Needless to say I didn't get eggs for a couple of days.
