What did you do in the garden today?

We had two lovely days in the 80s with sunshine. Today is just in the 60s though and it's wet and cloudy. At least the garden and grass are getting water.
The 10 day forecast has 6 days of rain spread throughout it. I will not be watering outdoors again for a while.

In running out of 4" pots. I bought a while sleeve of them this year. I have so many plants growing though and need to get them outside to free up pots for younger starts. Yesterday we got all the marigolds out. I reused their pots for the sunflowers. I up potted yellow squash. I only had 3 starts from 9 sides. I reseeded another 6 cells. I also up potted 2 more sugar pumpkins (we have 3 now), black diamond watermelons and a few other things I don't recall. I need to still up pot the remaining cucumbers, kale, and brussel sprouts though.

I'm hoping my potatoes and Jerusalem artichokes pop up soon. With all this rain coming, I don't want the tubers to rot in the ground. Waiting eagerly for corn too, particularly the glass gem so I can get the beans in around it.

I saw yesterday that onions are popping up. Parsnips, carrots and lettuce are sprouting. Kale and brussel sprouts that we transplanted a month ago are slowly growing. Almost all the radishes are sprouted and growing nicely. I did have to pull a few that were too close to each other. The new strawberries are showing good signs of life. We are still weeks from picking our first vegetables (likely the radishes), but things are going in the right direction.
I use solo type cups from Dollar General. Sleeves of 100 for about 4$. They are sturdy enough to drill holes in the bottom and resuse season after season. PLUS you can write all your data on them, which I use as a guide for the next year. LOL.

I've done solo cups in the past. My experience was that they crack easily. The pots I purchased this year were inexpensive, and while the seem like cheap plastic they actually take a beating. The flex rather than crack. My pup got ahold of a 6" pot and I was shocked to see that as I uncrumbled it there were no cracks.

That said, I may use solo chips in a pinch here if I cannot get transplants out with all this rain.

Anybody have thoughts on transplanting the day before a storm? How long do pants need to establish themselves outdoors before they are likely to withstand a thunderstorm?

I’d plant right in the soil in that case. Things might not pop up in perfect rows but I don’t care.

Our florida neighbor went for a nighttime swim with his wife, when something kept banging his leg. He thought it was the hose for the pool sweep. Need I elaborate?

(Saltwater pool)
I probably wouldn’t go swimming at all for years if that happened to me!

If we’re talking general but not severe thunderstorms I’ve planted stuff out while it was starting to storm and they were fine. If you tend to get storms with a lot of hail or strong winds I might be a little cautious. I actually just put out maybe 30 basil starts, sweet potatoes and a pepper this morning in between storms.

I've up potted all my sprouted tomatoes. I replanted all the little pots that didn't sprout, so I hope I get some more 'maters!

It's supposed to get back down into the mid-30s a few nights this week. I sure hope that is the end of that nonsense.

Some potato seeds have sprouted! I forgot my water bottle, so I have a reason to back out there and I'll try to remember to take a pic of the 'tater sprouts.

only other garden activities I need to do are to up pot the last round of starts, and actually plan where things will go -into which beds.
That's pretty much where I'm at now, I set out some determinant tomatoes to harden off, and I'm going to harvest a row of lettuce to put this first group there, it should take them some time to get big enough to start crowding the other greens.
My older horseradish plant is going to bloom ! I can't wait. LOL.
I'm considering putting in some horseradish, I love the really hot stuff Inglehoffer makes and it's be nice to make some of my own.

Got the watering done and saw to critters then played a game of whack a mole with my broody sfh. I snatched her off the nest and tossed her butt out the coop door then stood there and shoved her out again every time she tried to sneak in. Sneaking isn't very effective if you're making those crazed ticking sounds so I could tell her from her sister pretty easy. I have store run again today for soil, manure, and pots so I'll stop at the feed place and get a couple hanging dishes so I can put her in chicken jail. It was pretty funny, she got good at dodging and once there was an empty nest box I let her in again. Honestly I feel sorry for her but she's pretty disruptive right now and just taking her out of the nest is useless.

Time to start moving plants out of the greenhouse to harden off, I think I have enough starts for twice as much garden as I have. And my pickup order just notified me they have none of the 12 bags of soil I ordered so that'll mean a side trip to find a good substitute. I hope Farrs still has those huge cheap nursery pots.

Stay dirty everyone!

I have to say I'm really impressed with the bare root strawberry plants I got from Nourse - every one of them looks fantastic & is growing good leaves. I would totally buy from them again.

I have to pick up chicken food tomorrow & I'm scared to go in the place, they'll have plants out! :gig

I remember as a very small child floating in a float we had at the lake & a snake wrapping around my leg in the water! :th I also remember my grandfather killing lots of snakes on our little beach with a shovel.

I would put my starts out before a storm if it wasn't going to be super windy or hail & as long as they had been hardened off.
