What did you do in the garden today?

Good morning gardeners. It took me quite awhile to catch up on the thread. It sounds like many of you had a nice Mothers Day yesterday. The weather here has been a little cool and wet but fortunately the rain is happening at night. The day time highs are forecasted to be in the mid to upper 60's this week with increases into the low 70's next week. Finally! I dug around where I planted corn and couldn't find anything so I'm trying to decide whether to replant the corn seeds or just plant pole beans. Saturday I planted more radishes and arugula. I also planted some pansies in the planters next to the chicken yard gate. I painted the t-posts and some of the fence wire black so it's not all that visible from the street. I did get the summer flower bulbs planted on Saturday as well as some more parsley seed. My bunching onion seeds have disappeared so I may be picking up more of them. I am really hoping the weather warms up enough to get all these vegetable and flower starts out of my sunroom. Not to mention the two pots of rosemary and the large dish planter of Impatiens. It's time to clear the room.

I got almost all of the peppers and eggplant out Saturday. More than 60 transplants. I got the uprights done on the bean trellis and all the weeding. I also had to dig daffodils and gladiolus out of the old garden so it could be tilled. Yesterday I didn’t have time for much since we had Mother’s Day activities from 11-8. I got some stuff watered that was about it. Also had to run a snake out of the coop luckily the chicks were alright. We got 3.75 inches of rain last week and we just got another 2 overnight. Today I want to get the bulbs planted and some polls cut for the tomato trellis what I get done beyond that will depend on just how wet the garden is.View attachment 2661316

Mother's Day was filled with laundry, washing dishes by hand, taking inventory from the little shop down the road, and online shopping. The dishwasher turns out to have a major intake valve fault that has to do with the system that prevents leaks and flooding. To repair it would cost half of what a new machine would cost. This LG machine has been a lemon since we bought it. Rusting, dish destroying racks: installed improperly, leaking door seals, bad computer board, etc.

The only downsides to doing dishes by hand is the amount of water we use doing it (machine is super high efficiency) and the fact I have to take my thumb brace off to handle slippery dishes. But it's only until the 25th.

Glasses shop balked at fixing my glasses, but I reminded them that when I bought them that I told them to put in my file that I wouldn't be putting them on until May, and then that's when they were considered new. They agreed to that when I bought them, but she never put it in my file. But the girl fessed up to her boss that she remembers that (how many alpaca owners come in and say they aren't getting their new glasses ON until after after their spring workload?) Doc agreed to make new lenses. I swear. I don't even know if the script is right yet, I can never tell until I wear them a few days.

We had a 1/3rd inch of rain, so I need to water the beans this morning. I have tomatoes that need labeled and up-potted. Already warm in the greenhouse, need to go open vents.

I don't have a dishwasher, sooo wish I did! Hoping to redo the kitchen next spring & put one in to save on water. My kitchen is small so giving up the cabinet space will be tough. It's just DH & I so I plan on an apartment sized one.

As for machinery, DH handles all that - he puts shut off valves in the fuel lines before the carbs & cuts off fuel to shut it off so there is no fuel sitting in the carb to gum up. At the season change everything gets run completely dry, nothing ever sits with fuel in the tank for the off season.

I didn't get anything done in the garden yesterday & won't today either. After cleaning the coops & rearranging all the feeders & waterers because of the littles move, my allergies were so bad I had to call it a day. I have rashes on my face & my eyes, everything is so swollen. I was going to go to the doc if I didn't look better this am, but it's starting to settle. This is why I try to do as much as I can in the garden early, I can't handle the pollen. Fun fun.

I actually just looked it up and salmon flies are aptly named because even larger fish in river systems prey on these flies when the hatch out of the water after 3 years of being in their nymph stage. Apparently timing your fishing excursion with the salmon fly hatch is a great way to catch trout and other river fish. Oddly enough, salmon don't eat while migrating through freshwater rivers to breed but are caught on flies mimicking the salmon fly because they snap at them out of annoyance apparently.

We threw together a diy snake grabber with a long piece of PVC and some twine. I have interest in sticking my hands anywhere near a snake longer than I am tall. That said these rat snakes are the least bitey thing I’ve ever seen. We poked it on the head about 20 times trying to get it to drop the wooden egg.
So I probably would have been fine grabbing it.
