What did you do in the garden today?

tried parsnips last year. They took a long time to sprout. Then, it was sporadically. I think part of the problem was heat/dryness of the bed, even though I specifically tried to keep it moist. Finally, several sprouts looked good...until someone didn’t latch the chicken gate a few feet away. The chickens munched the parsnip sprouts! So, we never got to harvest any

Only time I ever paid for a potted plant, medusa pepper, it was a big pot and beautiful small straight up peppers multi color. Set it down next to our back door step, ended up with about a hundred little peppers, planned on keeping seeds and potting my own next yr. Next day, all peppers dissapeared...

Once their eyes open they always look disapproving! And your garden always looks beautiful, AND so organized! The part of me that loves order is always so envious. @TJAnonymous, happy birthday and I hope it's a great one!

I meant to mention before, my potato bags are finally sprouting but the chickens took care of that for me so never mind. I've gotten so used to them ranging in the yard, I was afraid at first a hawk would get one but I should have worried more about them getting at the pots. I might have to build a small fence around the greenhouse to protect the seedlings hardening off.

There's a white wooden shed that we got from a friend when we were moving in and I stashed a lot of stuff that I wasn't ready to deal with in the move. Now that was 2 years ago this August and I still go in there and find things I need but had completely forgotten. Last week I found a bunch of different plastic chicken netting and this time I found 4 fence posts and a nice 5' trellis. It's like a magic bigger on the inside than the outside shed.

Thought it was on here, Robin's. Saw some over and over visiting my old '64 Case 530 backhoe, no please don't make a nest in it, I still use it, it's parked for now keep checking it don't see a nest yet. Keep seeing them perching and looking. No nests yet. They usually make a lot of nests in the backside of my garage that's ok. Not sure why they keep looking for spots on my backhoe, think maybe I should start moving it around a little bit maybe keep them from thinking about making making nests??

We have had a string of weeks of nice, warm weather in the 60F's, 70F's and even hit the low 80F's a day or two. I got lots of tomatoes, peppers, cucumbers, beans, strawberries, etc... planted these past few weeks. Looking forward to a good garden this year.

And then, FROST WARNING tonight with temps forecast down to 26F. To be fair, where I live, our average last frost date is like the 1st of June, so I was overly optimistic by planting the garden beds a few weeks early. So I spent a few hours today trying to figure out how to cover my plants for the night so they all don't die on me due to the frost. I found some tarps and covered some raised beds, but then ended up using a lot of empty 7 inch plastic pots turned upside down over the remaining plants. I think/hope that will protect them from the frost overnight, but to be honest, this is the first year I have even tried to plant the garden before the 1st of June, so my frost prevention defenses have not been considered before.

I got the pots at Menards over the past few years on their sales when you basically got the pot for free after rebate. I had a stack of about 50 of these plastic pots in the shed, never being used, but today thought they might work to cover my plants and protect them from the frost. I am a big sucker for buying things that are free after rebate. Looks like I might have found a good use for these free pots after all.

Almost 90 here yesterday, 39 tomorrow, I hope we don't get frost. Never know. Roll the dice.

We don't usually get a frost after Memorial day, except for last yr... Hit my giant pumpkins hard, killing all big leaves. Came back though and grew great biggest pumpkins we've ever had.

That late freeze last year was bizarre. It killed trees all over the neighborhood.

Got the squash and bush beans weeded. Finished the pole bean trellis (finally). And got the filet beans planted on it. The rattlesnake beans will have to go in tomorrow. I also got some okra planted and transplanted the collards I had let go to seed in a pot. I got about 2/3rds of the soil for the next round of corn prepared so I’ll finish that tomorrow too. We got a little bit of rain the past 24hours but not nothing significant. I’m still grateful for every drop though. It also cooled it off enough for me to get some actual work done which was a relief.

Today is my birthday. Took the rest of the week off work to get some R&R and I've been busting my butt since I got up at 7 am.

There's a siding guy in town who let's me go through their scrap pile for free. I pulled out a bunch of vinyl siding that I'm going to use on the coop we built last fall. We never got around to covering the plywood and now it is starting to warp and mold from exposure. Saturday and Sunday are going to be beautiful with a high in the low 70s. I'll go scrub the mold with bleach water while the kids put up the new siding on the coop.

My oldest son is in the Air Force. He got leave this weekend and is coming home tonight to visit with my granddaughter. It is the first time I've gotten to see him since Christmas!
