What did you do in the garden today?

Last night was the LAST NIGHT of covering up strawberries and tomato plants to protect them from frost. Really, this time it better be for real!

We split wood for several hours today, until the gas can was empty. So tomorrow is planting day. I need to dig a bunch of extra big holes for the starts, add egg shells, greensand, and some soggy cardboard bits. The starts I planted (that came up, that is) are BIG this year. Ok, not the peppers. For some reason, my pepper starts never do very well. I'll still plant them, but I did buy some peppers to be sure we get some.

I hope to have a report of sore muscles, but not too sore, and an empty dog crate. I use the dog crate to harden off starts, but it's also my brooder. Chicks next Saturday!!!

IF, hahahaha I get to the garden today I want to try and RE-do my jalapeno seed, I just get so upset when something eats my seed starts. I need to thin the new turnips, and I have neglected the beets maybe to long, I'll see if I can thin them, if not I'll reseed in another spot and use these just for the greens. It was warmer last night, I am itching to put the tomatoes out in the bed????????
but I am still in baby chick mode,

two of the 4 that blew me off yesterday asked if they could come today...sure why not...

Came across this great LOC photo today.

Wow, she really doesnt look to be more than 40 something, her face is so thin.
a VERY hard working woman

It is raining here AGAIN. Nice morning so I shouldn't complain. I have 2 girls that are broody now, (including the quitter from a few weeks ago). The other is my BLRW. Didn't think wyandottes went broody often, but she's very persistent. Even after moving her into a dog crate. I guess I'll find some hatching eggs. Not that I need more chickens LOL.

I need to cover my straw bale garden with some pvc piping covered with netting. I thought I would have until tomatoes started getting red and tempting but....I don't know how familiar you guys are with PeeWee Herman. He says to his girlfriend "I'm a loner Dottie, a rebel." My Dottie is the loner/rebel at my house. She was all alone yesterday on top of the bale newly planted with beets!

I have some tiny black prince tomatoes starting to grow too! I'm so ready for my own produce.

Morning all. Rain finally ended, for now. We ended up with 3 1/4 in the last 2.5 days. Chilly out still though, we could use some warmth!

I'm not happy with my pepper starts either, they're still so small. I was hoping they'd start growing good & then we had all this cold rain. My straw bale squash aren't looking very good either & I'm not sure why. The others in the pots look great so it's something about the bale, or maybe they just aren't getting enough sun. :idunno Not sure I could find any bush squash starts at the store so hopefully they pull thru.

I got all the feeders & waterers cleaned out with bleach today. Threw the girls some lettuce plants. DH pulled the horseradish out of the ground & planted it in a 5 gallon bucket back in the same spot. Hopefully that'll keep it contained.

Ohh. How do you obtain/grow horseradish? I might need to try that!

A guy DH works with gave him a little chunk of it & we stuck it in the ground & it grew, lol. Easy to grow, you just need a little bit of the tuber (not sure if they're technically called tubers, but you get the idea!) & it will grow from that. You do have to be careful because it's very invasive so either plant it somewhere where it doesn't matter or plant it in a container.

I'm not sure if you can plant a piece from something you get in the store - I wonder. Might be worth a google. But I do know there are people on Amazon that sell it.

Good morning all. I emptied and refilled the duck pool and that’s about it for outside. We didn’t get up until almost 0600 and after the park it was already getting warm out there. We made a trip to walmart for a few things and I needed a bucket lid so went looking for those. They didn’t have any of course, but I did find the cutest gnome for the garden. I also decided to try a mushroom kit for fun

I had to replace my mortar and pestle and the new one came with instructions for seasoning it. I’ve never done that before, now I feel fancy :gigThe child is taking her spawn to an indoor trampoline park today to get rid of some of their energy. They’ve been driving their grandfather up the wall this weekend, short trip. I went to the eye doctor last Friday and was terrified I’d find out my eyes are shot after taking migraine meds for a few years. Thankfully it’s cataracts but I have to get surgery scheduled for both eyes soon. Our medical insurance starts tomorrow so hopefully in July I won’t be blind and unable to drive any longer. It sucks when you always need a ride unless you’re just going down the street. Anyway, have a great day everyone, I think a nap is in my near future.

Since I still have a ridiculous number of tomatoes, I went ahead and planted 2 dozen large cherry tomato plants surrounded by marigolds, mulched with pine shavings in the compost flat area by the hen house. Last year, tomatoes grew wild there, but I've been mowing it this year.

Since it is relatively FRESH chicken compost and alpaca poo, the tomatoes grown there are just for the chickens, hence the cherry tomatoes. Although I must get up a chicken wire fence, or they'll never grow. Goobers are plucking leaves off the plants.

I think I'll also plant squash there too. Maybe the girls can keep the squash bugs at bay.
