What did you do in the garden today?

In weird garden news, my potatoes have flower buds!!!!

they were planted only a few weeks ago!!!

of the three types, the ones with flowers are the Carola -a yellow type that is indeterminate. The other two are not that advanced. The Carola basically have grown noticeable every day.. they are quite full and tall for only being in the ground for such a short time.

Holy cow @penny1960 - good job!

I finally got a start on the 'pollinator' garden - I got 2 irises (I don't think they do much for pollinators, lol) 2 purple coneflowers, one big black eyed susan & one plant that I think is some type of lilly, but I don't really remember. All taken from plants in the yard. I'm going to do some lavender from seed but will wait till spring probably for that since all my grow stuff is put away. I have some day lily to get in there too, my back had had enough though. I have a bird bath that I grow lettuce in in the winter, I'll put that out there too.

I got some chips spread by the fence where I grow some pole beans & some put in the pots - the weeds were taking over the pots & the chips help keep them from drying out too.

I also got some coneflower & black eyed susans planted by the shed, hoping to eventually get the whole base of it planted but digging holes is hard around here so I have to pace myself.

I got 27 tomatoes planted in my heavy soil garden. Those, 6 peppers, and 5 melons took me 6 hours.

In my sandy soil garden, I planted 13 tomatoes in 45 minutes. I could dig the holes with my hands.

Night before last, we did indeed have frost. It took a few asparagus spears, wilted some potato leaves that are just coming up, and curled a few leaves of other things. But the strawberries are ok! And a few are turning pink now.

I am tired now. I think I'll sleep well tonight.

What is this on our Maple tree? its only on one area we can see - a shaded branch that is a young branch.

Lol, I searched weird pink bumps on maple leaf. Funny the stuff we look up, isn't it?

Well, it rained buckets today, and threw in some dime size hail as a bonus...yay. No damage done though. The good news is I now have mapped out the low areas of the property (aka temporary lakefront property lol), and I've also got some rough measurements so I can get started drawing up a plan for the garden layout.

The standing water has also solidified in my mind the need to go up into raised beds rather than plant into slightly remediated ground. I'll be pricing out materials soon, but need to wait until DH has a date for a first paycheck on the calendar.

He also wants to look into curved edges on the beds for a more organic feel. Has anybody seen anything like that? I haven't.

Nope, but it could be done. A classic wood bed uses a post in the corners. You could cut it to be a curve. If you go with Metal walls, cut the curve and the metal follows the curve. It would take a little more time, but he’s interested, so that’s a bonus!
