What did you do in the garden today?

28 pages behind after being on vacation for the past week... Not bothering to catch up. Just moving forward. I hope everybody is doing well.

While we were gone the weeds took the opportunity to grow unfortunately. I was able to pull a 5 gallon bucket full already and there's still more to get. The garden is growing well though. A bunch of the garlic is ready to pull. Not huge bulbs, but there are cloves in them and I started them in Feb indoors as an experiment since I didn't know to plant garlic in the Fall being my first time growing it. I will definitely be planting it this Fall in the garden. The papers are being a bit slow, but night time temps does back into the 50s and days in the 70s. Bouncing back to 60s and 80s in a day or so. My cucumbers are the one crop that just hasn't done anything. It looks like the plants haven't grown a bit. I'm hoping they kick into gear soon. And some of you helped me with my question on the corn and beans in the 3 sisters patch - turns out the corn is growing faster than the beans for now, thankfully.

:rantS-L-U-G-S- :barniethey eat everything-- I have noticed we dont have as many frogs this year, it may be early, I have only seen 1. I am not hearing them either. I have seen way more slugs than usual. I had to pull them off the Black Cohosh, the Bergamont, lettuce, the Echinacea,,, and more. I have been using diatomaceous, it does help,:he but HOLY COW! I need more frogs.

You need ducks.

Good morning gardeners. I guess I can hold off on buying a boat as the rain has stopped for now. We got over 3 inches of rain over the past several days, probably near 4 inches. (The best news is the water leak issue I had repaired in the basement is holding up well. No wet floor down there.) Comfortable temps today in mid 70's then heading for the upper 80's and 90's for longer than I care for. I did manage to thin the corn patch and hill the dirt around their bases yesterday. The butternut squash I direct seeded is doing great and starting to get their secondary seeds. Everything was looking pretty good on my garden walk this morning. And the curly endive is finally growing. Still little action in the lima bean bed. Wah! I'm giving it a few more days then will figure out what to put there in it's place. The "must do" of the day is to throw more dirt on the potato plants and spray the peach tree again. I think tomorrow will be a better day to cut the boards and posts for the new grow out pen, and oh my goodness, I may likely have to mow the backyard again tomorrow. We'll see. And I almost forgot: crushed eggshells deter slugs. They don't like to drag their slimy little bodies over the "shards" of broken shells.

ASPARAGUS question:

how big of a space? I’d give it its own raised bed, on top of the ground. Pretty sure it puts out deep roots, so it could do that.

I’m not sure how it spreads, or how fast it spreads. so, I don’t know what to expect.

we like asparagus, but don’t think we need a lot. However, I don’t know how many stalks get harvested per X sqft.

so, experienced asparagus “farmers” help me out. Space? Raised bed ok? Etc.

Planted a chicken garden in the compost area. Instead of letting tomatoes come up from seed and growing wild. Things are in rows, mulched, and with 2 foot chicken wire around them.

Whole thing took about an hour and a half for 2 dozen plants and two rows of marigolds.

Plants were free, wire was $20.

No plans for the day except taking the dog to the vet. She goes in at 11 and stays the afternoon for bloodwork, and x rays. She'll either come home with steroids or, sniff, not come home.

She's not really eating or drinking, and she's sleeping ALL the time. It can't all be that she hurts to much to move around. Mentally she's all there. She can no longer get up on the furniture, won't sleep in her giant kennel at night.

Just ugh. So we'll see.

As for the main garden. I pruned on Friday. We had a 1/4 inch of rain Saturday. So I'll see if I need to water and feed today.

There are finally berries on the honey berry bush. That took 4 years.

OH I was going to toss all the remaining tomato plants for sale last night, but a young couple emailed me last night. They bought tomatoes from me three weeks ago, but then had to make an emergency trip to her dad funeral out of country. While gone their whole garden died. I will gift her ALLLLLL the tomatoes she wants when she comes up.

Everyone get down and dirty today.

I’m not really experienced but this is my second year with my tiny asparagus bed @Acre4Me. I didn’t want to give up too much space so my asparagus bed is 3 x 5 feet. I planted crowns last year and got just a very few spears this year before letting the plants grow. They are all doing well and looking healthy so I am looking forward to a small “harvest “ next Spring.

Good to know! Thanks!
