Potato flowers are opening (one variety)!

neighbor has Colorado potato Beetles (like last year). Boo! Neighbor thinks flicking them off will work, but nope -they are pretty durable and invasive. So I’ll keep my eyes open for them on my plants.

I have a type of ground cherry here that the potato beetles like. I pull that stuff up whenever I see it. If it has beetles or the tell tale orange eggs on the underside of the leaves, I grind it into the dirt with my shoe.

They didn't have 5 Blue Australorps due to a poor hatch, so I got the two they had and two Jubilee Orpingtons! Pictures soon.

Mine would eat too much of the garden plants! But I’ll be keeping my eyes open for the beetles.

last year, he had them pretty bad. This neighbor lives 2 doors down, but his garden is at the back of his property, just like mine. He used Sevin dust liberally, but it didn’t do much to curtail them. Apparently they develop resistances quickly. The neighbor between us also grew potatoes last year and got some of the beetles, but picked them off/killed them. I got some and also picked them off and killed them, and inspected my plants daily when I knew they were on neighbor plants. So, I’ll be doing daily inspections now.

Hmm, those dang bugs ate my peppers last year, just be aware. It may be necessary to bug net the potato patch a few years in a row to encourage the bugs to go away.

Too dang hot to do anything outside today. I started burning in five minutes flat, ugh. Need one of those lightweight uv shrug things I guess, because I hate sunscreen. Silly I know, but it's a texture thing. I'll go out and water later this afternoon/evening.

Yeah. I am debating whether to get more females but I don’t think Jasper needs more than four so might just leave it at that.

Interesting! I’ll need to look up their diet/ what they eat. I don’t think I have them in my garden -other than what might have flown over last year. Current potatoes are elsewhere this year. Haven’t seen any at all in my yard..so far.

My pepper bed is furthest away from neighbor, so likely would see them on something else first. But definitely keeping eyes open!

So, the Colorado potato beetle eats potatoes as first choice, but will eat tomatoes and peppers, eggplant, nightshade, and ground cherry. Is it too much to ask the beetles to stay in neighbor’s yard?


nice day, but got a little sunburned. One more task tonight: finish stringing the pole bean trellis. One side to complete.

Sold 9 chickens at auction today. Needed to make room for the 2021 chicks. I didn’t stay, so I’ll have to wait for the check to arrive to see what they sold for. We also put down the chicken with the bad eye. So, we are down 10 chickens and it was quieter in the run today.
