What did you do in the garden today?

LOL.

My mom did that with any kind of beef roast. even a tinge of pink in the very middle was way-undercooked to her. So, I grew up having to chew, chew, and chew any beef. As an adult, I do not overcook it at all - it definitely needs some red (or dark pink!).
All the food. All of it. How one over cooks mashed potatoes I will never figure out, but she did! And they called me a picky eater....:barnie

Heat is killer today. The landlady has extended the use of her home to cool down if necessary. She's a sweet lady.

No gardening today beyond possibly watering this evening and babying my sprouts in the closet. Well, what passes for a closet in an rv, lol. The tomatoes, both the cherry and bonny best are starting to come up, and I had to take the lid off the okra this morning. They were knocking their heads on the roof. Additionally, the jasmine and honeysuckle are getting ready to put on fresh flowers despite the heat. Pretty impressed!

I MESSED UP! I am SO MAD at myself.....:he:he:he:he

I had 4 broody hens sitting in 4 different nesting boxes. After the first 1 (or 2?) hatched a couple of chickens, three of the broodies pretty much quit sitting on the nests and collectively tried to raise the 3 chicks. I also purchased 6 day-old chicks and put them under the 3 broodies who had all moved into ONE large nesting box.

In the meantime, Broody #4 still kept sitting on her nest with no chicks hatching. The other 2 abandoned nests kept collecting more and more eggs as the other chickens started laying in them again. As of yesterday, I noticed that Broody #4 was leaving the nest more and more. I figured she was getting ready to give up because it has been a month and she still didn't hatch any eggs. To be fair, I'm CERTAIN they are fertilized....

So today, I found one of the chicks dead in the chicken yard. It had been limping so I'm guessing that the others pecked it to death. I went into the yard to clean it up and also peeked in the coop. Broody #4 had left the nest yet again....but I also had a new broody who decided to take up residence in one of the abandoned nests that is LOADED with eggs. I assumed most of them are probably dead since they've been left.

So what did I do???? I grabbed up a bucket and scooped up all the eggs from all 4 of the original broodies' nests. I figured they would all be dead or just recently laid. I moved the new broody to a different nesting box that has 4 recently laid eggs in it. Then I took the bucket out to chuck the dead eggs.... Only, THEY WEREN'T DEAD. :hit Had I honestly thought ANY of them would be viable, I would have (should have) candled them.... But I really thought surely none of them were alive. When I chucked the eggs, several broke and revealed viable (gasping) chicks in them which I'm certain will die now.

I feel so terrible!!! I know it was a mistake but I feel just awful that I killed them....

haha - dry and pasty?

I think I need to drink some water now just thinking about it.

I thought it looked like leeches

I can see what you mean.

For me, dates look like big bugs. Dates taste fine, and I'll eat chopped ones, but to eat a whole one ...like eating a bug. :sick

I'm sorry that that happened! It is a mistake I have seen others experience on BYC too- too many factors against success, so the eggs are tossed or removed, but realization they were viable. It is sad, but a lesson learned. Hopefully the new broody can accomplish hatching her brood!

Auction update!

I'm not for-sure on which chickens sold for what amount, but can make a guess. All cages were labelled with breed, egg color they lay, and hatch month/year. Most were 2 year olds, with a couple 1 year olds.

Sold 9 chickens across 4 cages. Looks like a buyer bought all chickens in whatever cage they bid on. They bid to get first choice in the cage, but winning the bid means you can choose to buy however many in the cage - you get choice.

Buyer A bought all chickens in 2 cages for $7 each and $8 each (total of $37). This is likely the 2 Brahmas, and a White Chantecler, and a Red Dorking.

Buyer B bought 2 Chickens for $10 each (total $20). I suspect this was the cage of 2 BCM that lay dark brown eggs.

Buyer C bought 3 Chickens for $11 each (total $33). I know this was the cage of 1 EE, 1 RCRIR, and 1 GLW.

So, after commission, I can buy a few bags of feed. Hopefully the girls are enjoying their new homes.

I went back outside and collected all the eggs that weren't cracked and broken. I saw many that had very red bloody cracks. I'm sure those were alive. I couldn't bring myself to open them and see what I had done. Just breaks my heart.... It is definitely a mistake I will NEVER make again.

Anyway, I candled those that were not cracked. Found quite a few that were still moving or looked viable. I put them back in Broody #4's nest. She had come back and took up a different spot since hers were gone. I moved her back to her own nest. Now let's hope that these eggs actually make it... :fl
