What did you do in the garden today?

Not able to kneel here or bend have tires stacked 2 high not allot of weeding needed that way .. May be able to plant black mustard seed today :lau just 68 ooutside

I stacked tires too. I used free mulch in the bottom tire as a weed barrier and soil mix in the top. Love not having to bend down for those....

I'm using them just as I want some like baby kale...i had read you can harvest earlier rather than waiting for mature plants. It sure tasted amazing too!

OK. I really don't know what they should look like for "baby" kale size. Sometimes I like to harvest "baby" Swiss Chard, but they still have the shape of the full grown leaves, just a lot smaller.

No, it is perfectly safe to grow in old tires. Any potential toxins are inert unless burned. They take eons to break down which is why they are a problem in landfills. Also, if they were toxic, then we would have contaminated rivers, streams, and soil from road runoff. Any issues of this nature is usually from oil or other hazmat leakage like antifreeze, not tire debris....

That's good to know. I am having such good luck using an old tire for my Buttercup Squash that I am thinking of growing more food plants in other tires. Easy way to make a small raised bed. And I have a number of old tires that need a better afterlife.

No gardening today other then turning on the soaker hose on the straw bales. My teenage son has a pretty serious case of poison ivy, so I took him to the Dr. Later my sister rented out a movie theater room for her 4 year old's birthday, so DD and I went to that.

Purple Snurple is officially banned from broodiness. All her eggs were eaten (or not protected- but probably eaten by her). I locked all nesting areas for the night and she may go into isolation tomorrow to break her hormonal state.

I had 4 rats trap in the main coop
3 had rats in them one still alive shot it..
reset 5 traps today all food is covered so peanut butter is too tempting
Get 'em!

I'm up to 3 rabbits now. If they are found in the garden they get picked off with my pellet gun. I leave the ones outside the garden alone though.

One of the jars of pickled radishes I canned earlier today. Radishes, garlic, oregano, thyme, basil and dill all from the garden.

I plan to weed the tomatoes uphill today and then water the downhill garden. I can really get the trowel into the heavy soil when I'm down on my hands and knees (thanks, knee pads).

I watered the uphill garden last night, so I hope to see happy 'maters this morning.

A couple more days of hot and sticky, and then the weather is supposed to change. Whew.
