What did you do in the garden today?

Cabbage...beets...turnips...Spinach...arugula...Mustard greens.

Thanks for those suggestions. I think I might even have some seeds from prior years for the beets, turnips, spinach and mustard greens.

I just got a 4 unit 2" soil block maker, so I think I'll try to start those older seeds in some soil blocks and transplant them if they germinate. With all the heat and little to no rain this year, lots of my direct in soil seed planting just did not take this year. I'm thinking that if I start the seeds in some soil blocks, I might be able to keep the blocks moist long enough for the seeds to germinate properly and then transplant the best plants.

Other than woody plants, I don't know of any vegetable plants that are able to survive, or overwinter, our -40F temps in a northern Minnesota winter.

It looks like it’s possible! You would just need to be more careful with timing and mulching than most of us.

Never heard of a bracelets on an outdoor faucet. What is a bracelet? I have a manual timer on my outdoor faucet so I can just dial in time for the sprinkler and it shuts off automatically at the end of the countdown. I also have an Orbit automatic timer that I can set to turn on/off the water at specific times of the day. But I could not find it earlier this year so I bought an inexpensive, but very good, manual Orbit water timer. I just found the automatic timer a few days ago, but I'm happy with the manual timer for now.

But, yes, I would hate to leave the water on overnight. Depending on how you get/pay for your water, that could be a very expensive mistake. Hope you did not flood out the plants.

I use those coiled bracelets you usually see shop managers have on their arms holding the register keys, or sometime you can find them with mosquito repellent in them.
That's what we use, the repellent ones that no longer have zing in them. LOL.
We put them around faucet handles and when we turn ON the faucet the bracelet goes on you, so you remember to put the bracelet BACK and turn off the faucet. OC it only work if you put on the bracelet, which I forgot yesterday, because it is 3 years old, and floppy and needs replaced and won't stay on anymore. I'm replacing it today. LOL.

@gtaus it's a well, so just the electric to pump it out of the ground, and I didn't have it up high, and the garden is on a hillside. I haven't been running the main yard/pasture irrigation, so it won't be a blip on my electric bill either. Just a moment of stupidity on my part.

The soil blocker is nice. I gave mine away. Pro-Tip. Grab yourself one of those black-plastic concrete mixing bins at the hardware store. Two ends are straight up and two are sloped. This make a super blocking tub as you can fill it with your medium, use the blocker to scoop and swoosh and compact the medium up the sloped side towards you and them plop the blocks into your trays next to you.

Getting ready to pop out and put the deck together so it looks nice to passing tourists. I open the umbrella, and hang a very large quilt from the upper story deck railing. That and the giant wood windmill make a nice photo. LOL. The chickens will be roaming, you know, the whole country, farmy, thing.

The poor dog spent all day drugged out of her mind for fireworks. I'll probably drug her around 4pm today too.

I got the wander lust yesterday and drove out to the local air base for grocery shopping. It was a holiday there, so I was practically the only one there. LOL. It was lovely. HOT , but lovely. So I have a LOT of meat to process and get in the freezer and groceries still to put away today.

Garden-side, not much there today. I'll fix the irrigation in the orchard and turn that on after fixing the bracelet issue as well. LOL.

Coop and run need a good rake out, and nest pads need replaced.

Sewing today. New skirt and maybe some work on a quilt. And ALWAYS IRONING.

I’m growing “Just Right” too. Planted May 31. Am now able to pull some. Tons of greens. I’ll take a pic.

also, planted May 31 are “Hakerei” variety. White salad turnip. Smaller greens, but were a bit faster than “Just right”. Texture is a bit softer/less crisp too-actually nice for snacking. More subtle and sweet.

about a week ago, planted “Tokyo Cross” but older seed. Some have sprouted, but another few days will tell me if germination was good or poor.

Good morning gardeners. More rain and low temps. It was a very wet 55F when I got up earlier. Took care of the chickens and did a walk around the garden. One of my potato plants is getting eaten by some kind of bug but it's too wet to spray. Everything else is looking pretty good. I managed to get the roof onto the coop expansion yesterday. It never really stopped raining (we are up to around 2 inches or more of rain so far) but I just nailed the roof on instead of screwing it down with the drill. We are supposed to get breaks in the rain today and have actual clearing tomorrow. That's good news because the plan is to smoke a brisket tomorrow. I can work on the chicken coop while the smoker is working it's magic. Need to run to the store later this morning and am hoping to get a little more work done on the coop this afternoon. I can't wait to get these little fluffy butts out into the coop. I had wanted to mention this way back in the thread when the subject of rice cookers came up. I just refused to use the rice cookers for years because I make really awesome rice the old fashioned way. I finally bought a rice cooker a few years back and learned to love it. I have since upgraded from the $15 one with the non stick pot to the stainless steel pot. I like that I can fill the pot then turn it on and you get really nice rice. I had to learn to adjust for brown rice instead of white rice but now can even make a decent "Spanish" rice or brown and wild rice pilaf. A bright spot in my backyard garden is the big bowl of impatiens I overwintered in my sunroom. Now they are looking just beautiful. Also snapped a photo of one of the new lilies in the front yard garden. Love the hot pink color. have a good day all.

DH is out doing the whacking-o-the-weeds.

Garden wasn't too wet.
Irrigation is fixed and orchard line is on.

Shower and time to pack up food for the freezer.
