What did you do in the garden today?

Got just short of 2 gallons of stock to pressure can, it's cold and wet outside so canning it is for the day. Penny is doing really good, she doesn't pull anywhere near as much or try to shove past us at the front door. She calms pretty darned quickly if she sees a stranger on our walks, I can even talk to the people we meet now. A long way from being social enough but she's getting better all the time.

I filled that garden box. The whole thing. In one go. My body is now reminding me that while I didn't lose strength when I had the baby, I definitely list endurance and the ability to just keep going. For now at least. Dang I hurt.

For reference, each box section is roughly 3.5x3.5ft and 14ish inches deep. They are lined with plastic to extend the life of the pallet wood, open on the bottom. Cardboard on the ground inside as a weed barrier, then two to four inches of aged mulch, then eight to ten inches of garden soil, and a bit of mulch topping because cats and dry weather. Picture below for kicks and giggles. Hope it works right. IMG_2021-10-14-13-10-22-904.jpg
Blackberries, blueberry, and the two trees we ordered are looking good. Jury is out on the raspberries. I'll definitely be hunting a refund from Stark Bros if they up and die.

Purchased a 5th printing of a cookbook that was originally done in 1850s. It's got some great herbal stuff in there and some great recipes. I need to figure out the yeast thing. They use liquid hops yeast by the half and full teacup full. I use dried. I know there has to be a conversion out there, I just need to take two seconds and look it up.
I think I'm going to make a Washington cake this afternoon.

Good morning gardeners. Busy these days. I finished cleaning up the big garden in the backyard yesterday. I picked more lima beans and a couple of peppers. This morning I got out and cleaned up the overgrown grass and weeds around my heather plants and started planting more I got the other day. A happy find was one little plant that had hunkered down during the drought and is growing again. I neglect these plants because they are planted on a 45 degree slope in my side yard. It's really a PITA to do anything around them because of this. But I planted them there in hopes they will eventually cover the slope and I won't need to mow it anymore. I've been working on a cookbook project for my DD's birthday. Years ago when she moved out I made a cookbook of favorite recipes to take with her. Apparently, her ex-husband took custody of it so she requested a replacement. The tough part is putting into words the recipes that are really just in my head. LOL! I ordered a soil test kit yesterday and it should be here sometime next week. So I have time to clean up the other beds before it gets here. I want to test the soil before I amend it for the Winter. The impatiens I brought in are so tall now I think I should divide the plant and repot it. My scraggly white geranium I got on sale is blooming like crazy inside right now. It probably needs repotting as well. Looks like a lot of indoor gardening for me this winter. Have a great day all.

Decided I'm planting horehound in the verge this spring. I love the stuff.
I just had to go lookup verge... Not a term I'm accustomed to in this particular usage. I learned something new!

Today I should go plant greens in the box I built. However I've also got laundry and a few other things that simply have to get done today. So I doubt it's going to happen.

Hey brussel sprout growers! Was this a really bad year for sprouts? I always buy sprouts in bundles at the store, but this year had to toss roughly half of each bundle due to bugs and other damage. Finally broke down and paid more for the already prepped containers so I could actually get the full quantity of what I'm paying for, and even then I had to toss a couple.

As a bonus, I cook them in avocado oil, salt, and pepper on a pan at 350 for 45 minutes, toss to flip halfway through. They should be just starting to burn and taste amazing! Even my dh, who dislikes veggies and only eats them out of necessity, eats these like candy.

Afternoon all. I dare say it's almost a bit too warm out there!

Chased the tree trimming guy down, got a load of chips with 3 more on the way, just in time we were almost out. :yesss:

Going to pull the soaker hoses, the bush beans & the squash. I need to get ready for garlic planting. I've started putting things away, like garden decorations & support stakes & such. Feels like summer, but it is not, lol.
