Looks like they took frost out of our immediate forecast as well. Rainy, dreary, cool outside. Feels like fall! Same tomorrow. Guess living in a colder climate gave me some cold tolerance. I ran out a few minutes ago in my sandals and it's only 49. Didn't bother me, lol.

And for the first time ever, DH has bought a vehicle less than 5 years old, and it'll be delivered tonight. Mine was three when we got it... four years ago. Haha! If we have more kids I'll need to move to something with a third row, but we'll cross that bridge as necessary.

I plan to order a number of cold weather seeds from Baker Creek this week, and hopefully get them planted up this coming week or asap if DH and I can get another garden section done. I found a great recipe for leeks, and now I'm spending $3 for a bunch of three at the grocery store fairly regularly. It's priced as "each" instead of per pound, so I always get the biggest ones on the shelf. Still, it's adding up, so I want to start growing as much of that as possible. Also have a great rice recipe that uses carrots and celery, so I've got both of those planted up. I want to grow collards but they've been sold out... Think I should try for some onions too.

We had our first frost yesterday. Had our first snowflakes in the air today. SMH.

Just need the strawberries to die back tonight & then I can spread the straw on them & call the garden DONE!

Yup, me too. And if one bale is enough, then the other one goes in the chicken run.

The next few days are going to be cold and dreary and possibly wet. But after that, we have 4-5 days of at least dry, and maybe sunny. That's leaf raking weather!

Day 3 of getting the "teenagers" used to free ranging. The ladies (established hens) are being more assertive in their attempts to show the young whippersnappers who's in charge. No actual pecking or fights yet, so I'm pretty pleased. I don't think the young roos are going to put up with the hens' antics for much longer though. So far, I'm trying to stay out of it and let them find their own balance. 16 established hens vs 16 12-week old boys-n-girls. I figure with boys on Team Teenagers, there's about an even amount of uppitiness on both sides.

I'm a fan of the old and the new. I just bought a 2008 Dakota pickup today. Lol. Our minivan is a 2020 though bought brand new. I just prefer to put miles on a used vehicle and need to get rid of the 2002 malibu I've been driving for 5 years. The pickup will also allow me to pickup larger and messier items (i.e. bales of straw, mulch, dirt, etc.) and pull a trailer if necessary.

warm and dry here. no time for gardening as I have to cope with chickens. got 26 quails and know nothing about raising quails. can I plant anything for quails? would they eat chards, beetroot leaves, etc.?

They'll eat most plants that chickens will eat (most leafy plants in general). When I had quail I used to give them lettuce, cabbage and herbs like oregano and cilantro. I imagine they would eat the leaves you mentioned also. You might have to slice big leaves into smaller pieces if they are not willing to peck bits off.

Heavy frost = game over. I'll be picking the last of the tomatoes today to ripen in the cellar.
