What did you do in the garden today?

Good frosty morning gardeners. Yes, we got frost again. It was in the 30's this morning and quite a lot of frost in the front yard. I got a little more cleaning up in the garden done yesterday. This morning I pulled the pepper plants out of the containers in the front yard. It was a wee bit too cold to be raking so I'll try to get at that a bit this afternoon. I don't wait for frost warnings, I just look at the temperature forecasts and figure it out from there. There are trees in my backyard that provide a bit of a protective canopy over that area so I don't get the early heavy frosts there like the front yard does. That works well for my herb garden as I can get some fresh herbs for quite some time before the snow starts falling. My asparagus ferns are still green and billowing so I won't be touching them for quite awhile. That little bed is bursting with ferns so I am hoping for a nice asparagus harvest in the Spring. I hope to be wrapping up the garden work within the next few days, then I can start contemplating next year's garden.

Huh, since when do weather guys get to declare the growing season over? Need to sit them down and have a nice little chat about fall/winter gardens. *facepalm*

We haven't had our first frost yet in the Texas panhandle (just a light touch of it on the tops of the cars one morning last week but nothing on the ground or plants), but we've got some good chill in the air! It's supposed to be really nice for the next couple of days after today. I think I'll see about transplanting my one surviving strawberry plant and mulching it heavily. Might stick it in with the blackberries since I planted carrots with the blueberry.

Everything was alive and happy as of yesterday! With this cooler weather I've been shocked by how much growth the jasmine plant has put on. In one week I saw new growth of four to six inches!

I too hate car payments. We're planning on knocking both of these out asap.

Nope, we haven't had one yet. It may be a normal thing for a cutoff date & just abnormal that we haven't had a frost by Nov 1 so I've never heard of it!

Precisely. Usually it's already frozen some by the 1st, which marks the end of the local growing season. It was crazy late for us, which either means a milder winter, or mother nature's payback in February.

@Wee Farmer Sarah funny you mention next years garden...I went to pull up my garden diagram for next year so I knew where to plant the shallot sets......well dummy me deleted next years plan & kept last years instead! So all that work I put in was a waste. Sometimes I'm my own worst enemy.

So my local weather guy thinks it's weird too & I heard the weather guy on the news mention the same last night:

Trust me, I have talked myself blue in the face with this argument at work. I agree with not issuing more after the first hard freeze/frost, but you have to warn of the first one, especially in an abnormally warm/long season.

just like anything else, there are local and national guidelines. Frost freeze fall under local.

I think gophers only live west of the Mississippi River. There are none in the south east. Groundhogs are plentiful, as are , and especially voles and moles but no gophers! We have some very large and healthy groundhogs around my area. My horse tripped in a groundhog hole and threw me and rolled over me, once, years back. He was 17 hands and a big guy and I was black and blue all over, but was lucky me nor my horse did not break a bone! We have voles by the thousands on my property, they are the main source of food for the fox, bobcats, hawks, feral cats and etc. here. They make small holes everywhere but nothing is damaged too much by them. I am glad I don't have to deal with the gophers! I bought a 2006 pu truck last week, extensively refurbished, 100,000 mile/3 year warranty on the new motor, new ball joints, tie rod ends, shocks, drive shaft and universal joints. Drives like a new truck and I paid very little for it! My still working mechanic friend helped me go over it and it was a solid good buy! It replaces my older PU I bought new in 2004 that was totaled three times(never my fault accidents and never fully repaired) and had in excess of 300,000 miles with a slipping transmission and in need of a engine rebuild because of low compression, etc.. I got more than a third of the cost of the" new" truck for that worn out old wreck( body damage all the way around it!) from a national used car buyer corporation, that only viewed photos and who I told the truth to, about the mileage and condition! So far so good! I will only use the "new" truck for local use hauling straw, feed and etc.. God continues blessing me, despite myself being so weak and unfaithful to him. Thanks be to God!

Wow! You are very lucky. We lost a horse that way, broke a leg in a hole & had to be put down.
