What did you do in the garden today?

Good afternoon gardeners. It’s overcast today and there’s a little breeze. I’ve been looking online at a local resource that offers lots of info on xeriscape gardens and has a great list of plants with more info on their preferred growing conditions. Several cities here in the valley even have demonstration gardens available free to the public. I love that about AZ. We’re even encouraged to harvest rain water here.

I got my books today, can’t wait to get started on them over the weekend. I also got these cute little ants from my secret Santa at work to put in the garden. It’s a set of four in different colors

All I did outside today was water a few things. We have rain coming later in the week so it wasn’t much but these plants on a little hill and need some work to help with water retention before summer comes back. My list of to do is so long! Does it ever end?

I (try to) write things down in a garden notebook. I also have pages of notes like "Tomato Harvest 2019" and I note what worked well, what didn't, what to do differently, and any other thoughts I have about tomatoes and preserving them.
I can’t get organized enough and never remember to write down a thing!

Happy Solstice! I can't wait for the days to get longer!

I cleared away more of the used stakes and dumped a huge bin of rabbit stuff onto one of the beds and raked it out. I'm tempted to just scatter mixed leafy cold weather veg on top. Hm, and lightly cover said seeds with a light cover of coir to keep the wild birds from eating them.

You might remember Amelia, my BO who got the prolapse, well I've been watching her closely and fretting. Her poop on the poop boards looked like a bit of chicken poop with a glass of water dumped on it. The prolapse evidently made it impossible for her to retain her poo long enough for her gut to remove the water. I've felt very guilty for letting her continue on her way but she has acted so normal. No sitting still too much, or otherwise moping about. I kept telling myself I was giving her a chance, even when she did pluck her leggings and sometimes walk like she was reenacting the Funny Walks sketch from Monty Python. None of the other hens even tried to bully her and she's kept her high rank in the flock. Like I said, I felt like a coward for not culling her. So this morning, when I went out this morning, I saw her lying on her side and thought for a moment that it was over, but no, she was just in a dust bathing frenzy and when she got up to see what I was up to, I could see her legs were dry and clean. When I went to clean the poop boards there was no wet spot, not even any loose stool. I caught her and checked her butt (she is a very patient and trusting girl) and the prolapse appears to be gone. She might have laid again but I can't be sure until I catch her in the box. DP says this probably means she'll keel over within 24 hours, and I have to wonder. Both DP and I have seen the last rally that living things seem to do so often, but since she's never seemed "sick" I don't think so. Dang, I probably just jinxed it. Anyway, she's giving me hope so keep your finger crossed, she was a champion layer of big eggs and deserves a chance at an easy retirement.

Well bandage is off and staples removed . I learned they did not use a tourniquet . Still the upper leg was more sore than the knee . Took a Xray of knee and everything looks good .
So happy to get the good news! How are are you doing? Moving around pretty good?

Fingers AND toes crossed for Amelia :fl

This is going to be my first year with a secure garden. I am in zone 9. Mostly just during prep-work right now. Weeding and preparing the beds. Planning on planting peas and kale. Can't think of other winter crops, but I will be reading up on that soon.
Welcome to the thread! There a lot of cool season crops you can grow. Lettuce, broccoli/cauliflower, spinach and carrots to name a few. FYI we love pics on this thread!
